Baron Samedi asks for this game.
Since many people are having issues with running this game on Windows 7 and later, and this thread is more or less active, I will bump this thread with a solution that worked on my Windows 7 64 bit PC.

The game originally didn't even want to launch on my PC, but using dgVoodoo 2 fixed that problem. Then it would crash when using the DirectX hardware mode after loading a level. That was fixed by installing the latest patch.

I have created a page on PC Gaming Wiki with all the links and instructions:
https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Nocturne

Only "issue" left is that the intro video isn't being rendered, but you can simply skip it and watch it using VLC media player or something else. The memory warnings can also be skipped, or use Windows 98 compatibility mode if you wish.

dgVoodoo can also be used to enable antialiasing and anisotropic filtering. You can also enable bilinear filtering which makes the pre-rendered backgrounds less pixelated. Another thing that could be useful for some people is using dgVoodoo to increase color saturation, since the game is very gray-ish and often lacks color.

Alone In The Dark The New Nightmare and the Blair Witch games use the same engine as this game, so if you are having trouble with those or you want to enable some of the mentioned improvements you can try using dgVoodoo on those games too. I don't have those games to test.

Also it would be useful if someone would confirm this working on Windows 10, since I don't use it. Even if you don't have the game, you can simply try running the demo (I've put the links on the above PC Gaming Wiki page).

Cool, didn't know that!
Alone in the Dark is already here!

Will 2018 be the year of the Stranger for GOG?
I didn't even have a GOG account when this thread was created. Man, time sure flies by...

I highly doubt it. Terminal Reality has been closed since 2013. God knows who owns the rights to Nocturne.
Well this post says at least that Terminal Reality is still alive

what the hell? Do they still own the rights for Nocturne?

I am quite sure that it would be Take-Two Interactive.

What makes you sure of that? Terminal Reality has always owned the full rights to Nocturne, right up until they went bankrupt (after which, that may or may not have changed).

http://www.mobygames.com/company/gathering mentions "Take Two Interactive (TTWO) bought the company in May of 2000. " So Take 2 could have the publishing rights, edit: if they transferred when the company was bought, of course.

Since you're passionate about the game, try seeing - if you haven't already - if you can get in touch with any of the "top guys" who worked on it, or the founders of Gathering of Developers. http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/nocturne , http://www.mobygames.com/company/gathering

Take Two buying Gathering of Developers has zero relevance to Take Two acquiring the Nocturne IP. Terminal Reality owned (and as far as anyone can tell, still does) the Nocturne IP. Gathering of Developers never did.

Ancient-Red-Dragon's point is backed by the fact that these games were released through the Gathering of Developers

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gathering_of_Developers

Among these games, 5 were released on GOG.

https://www.gog.com/game/darkstone
https://www.gog.com/game/rune_classic

Only 1 of them has 2K Games as publisher.

https://www.gog.com/game/railroad_tycoon_2

So i don't think 2K has the rights for Nocturne.

Okay. Well, you might try contacting the former employee Jesse Sosa to see what is going on.

If only Atlus didn't hate the PC. :(

If you look on the title screen of that game, it says directly on it that Terminal Reality gave them permission to use the name "Nocturne" in their title. Terminal Reality didn't have to do that (they could have legally forbade the Shin Megami Tensei devs from using the word "Nocturne" at all) but they did anyway because they were nice.

As for Terminal Reality's Nocturne, that game is a masterpiece and quite possibly the best horror game ever made. It's orders of magnitude better than modern horror games in which you can't even defend yourself, and you have to keep dying & then reloading each same section dozens or hundreds of times in a row, because if you don't happen to run to the exactly precise pixel where the devs want you to go in order to trigger the next pre-scripted event, you automatically die by default.

Oh wow, I didn't notice that. That's very interesting. Thank you for pointing that out.

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear that the European publisher of Terminal Reality's Nocturne shared that sentiment, since in Europe, SMT: Nocturne had to be renamed to SMT: Lucifer's Call.
