Looking back at my original purchases, I joined for MegaRace, Postal and Redneck Rampage.

To be honest, I'm happy with a mix of newer and old releases (although I know that we've already had the easy wins from the classics). From my side, I wouldn't buy new games released here at full price (apart from Factorio, the last game I bought at full price was Civ IV back in 2004), so while I'd appreciate "new" games, I would be unlikely to buy them until they were discounted.

Of course, I also suspect that any "blame" for the lack of new releases on GoG sits more with the publishers than with GoG itself.

In most cases, yes, probably. But I don't know why we can't have Civilization 1&2, Prince of Persia 1&2 when we have other installments in the series :(

And I joined for Simon the Sorcerer.

There are a number of old / classic games I'd love to see here (as well as high quality indies)...

... for my money GOG does a pretty good job of mixing classic and new releases.

I can certainly understand being disappointed if your interest is either all classic games or all new games. But for me, the mix was pretty good in 2022.

I think we as people only see the games we grew up with as old. F.E.A.R 3 still seems new to me, but I understand the game came out 11 years ago. People seem to forgot how long 10 years can be.

I grew up with Master of Magic (it is the game I initially joined for), but I can acknowledge what old games are.

I don't mind the mix. I wouldn't mind if more old games landed, just as more newer ones would be good too.

Thing is, OP, (and we explain this a lot) when the IP holders decide they don't want to sell (or can't sell because of a legal argument over ownership) to GOG then that's it basically. And like others have said, this place isn't Good Old Games any more. The name isn't an acronym any more. It's just GOG.

I'm sure GOG would love to sell more. It tries. We can only hope more publishers & devs release their stuff here.

*shrug* More patience is the only thing to do. In the meantime, go: play.

Like many, I made an account at GOG for an old game, Shadow Warrior, which was even going free. I then discovered all the other good old games, some free some not, and basically proceeded to buy most of them. Some I still haven't bought, because they are never cheap enough, so I basically got to a point, where I had caught up, and then it was just the odd new addition of a good old game I would buy, plus any newer ones that grabbed my interest or I knew I would like.

From my perspective, GOG have been fairly regular adding old games since May 2017 when I joined. They've also been pretty regular with newer games, so while I would like more of both types, I am relatively happy enough ... except for some of the games that never drop to a fair price ... of course that is subjective to some folks, who are happy to pay almost anything because they love a game, so often an instant buy for them regardless of sense over price ... to each their own, except it irks me that such behavior just encourages bad pricing, but hey you can say that about a lot of things in this age of the throwaway culture.

I am guessing, that by now GOG have caught up with those old games on their backlog and community wishlists, that were easy enough to get and easy enough to update for modern OS. So from this point and probably for a while, they have been struggling with the harder ones, ones mired in ownership hell and tricky running conditions etc.

And of course, some owners have their own agendas and even dislike of DRM-Free and even dislike of GOG's management no doubt, or the conditions involved in any deal, etc.

As always it is a waiting and hoping game.

As for the be careful what you wish for .... I have seen many old games come here, that some consider good, but I consider too old to be any real fun now. Sure, you can enjoy 15 minutes of nostalgia, but after that ..... all subjective of course, but I would rather have less of those, important preservation aside, and more of the better old games ... which often equates to newer (after 1992).

Oy vey! Considering how many older games were released just last month makes this a very stupid question... once again... for the thousandth of times. *le sigh*
You almost sound like you're pining for the days during which one had to get all new hardware every other year or so just to be able to play the games that were coming out without them becoming slide shows (or not run at all).

To that I say: No fucking thanks! Been there. Sorta done that. I can do without.

The fact that games didn't require all new computers several times over in the last decade+ is a very good thing, as far as I'm concerned. The life expectancy of competently specced PCs - don't even need to be ultra-gaming-god-level tier - these days can be easily 5-10 years before a person even has to consider upgrading any parts.

Sure, PCs these days are cheaper than they have been 20-30 years ago, but I still rather spend my money on more games than the ever-revolving hardware cycle of yore. I don't at all miss that tech race. And some games feeling samey has little do with any actual tech involved.
Heh. The recently released Skyrim also can be considered a GOG. It just may not feel as old considering the oodles of newer re-releases it received over the past decade, and its modding community is still plenty alive.

Skyrim IS an old game. Over ten years, has to fit in that category. Admittedly, that applies to the original Skyrim, not the "current" version that's sold here, that was originally released in 2016.

Funny that kids disagree constantly and always oppose truth on the internet...Like trying to start text fights or something. Gog used to be good old games and the amount of new crap that gets released is ridiculous especially when it's bad games it's the truth you need to face it kids, some veterans like me want our good old games

This whole bickering about new games vs old games is silly. New and old games are not mutually exclusive. No game stays "new" forever either.

The decision to publish anything here lies mostly with the publishers, not GOG itself. You want more games, old or new? Then do what I do and go demand them from the publishers directly!

The ONLY reason I come to GOG is to buy DRM-Free games. That means I want ALL games to be here. Old and new.

I agree with those saying that they didn't subscribed here to play just old games, but to play games in a DRM-free way. That is why I have subscribed here too.
