I bought this several months ago (or a year or so maybe??). I couldn't get past the opening screen when using a controller despite it being obvious that the game supports controllers. Furthermore, I could never figure out how to even quit the game. Tried ESC, Q, control Q, a few F keys, etc., only way I was ever able to exit the game was by CTR-ALT-DEL and ending it through task manager.

So, does the game actually support a controller? XBox 360 for Windows controller is what I have. And how do you get out of the game? I was so flustered at not being able to even exit the game properly that I refunded it on the same day I bought it.

But, it does look something I may like. It's on sale again, and so if anyone could speak about the game (even if not the specific issues I'm talking about, general stuff too, like what you think about the game etc.) please enlighten me.

Thanks for any info.

OldFatGuy, thank you so much for the game! Is Warhammer: Chaosbane a game that utilizes the Unity engine? At times, I have had issues with my DualShock3 (PS3) controller working with those. I wish that I had the game in question, as I would love to test it for you; hopefully, someone will aid you with that, or provide their experience.

You're very welcome. Hope you enjoy it. I haven't yet tried that one (I think I have it on Steam) yet. It seems to get pretty decent reviews.
In general, you can end any program under Windows at any time by pressing Alt-F4. There are only very few programs which break with that standard.

Since I have Chaosbane I installed it to check the issue.

At the start screen it asks you to press any button on the input device you wish to use. The game seems to have a bug with registering the correct controller for the very first time.

I pushed the A button to use my controller and the game opened the character generation since there are no characters yet. But at this point the game would not accept any input from the controller any more. Mouse and keyboard didn't work either. So I ended the game with Alt-F4 and restarted it.

On the next try I pressed the mouse button and got through character generation using mouse and keyboard just fine. Once inside the game I pressed Esc to get into the options menu and switched input to the controller. After that the game would play just fine with the controller.

After that I deleted the character and restarted the game. This time when pressing a button on the controller at the start screen and going straight to character generation the controller worked as it is supposed to.

Okay, thank you very much! Yes, this was the exact same with me. Tried pressing key on controller, then it would do nothing, and it wouldn't recognize keyboard either after that. So, beginning with a key from keyboard, then ESC, then switch to controller, and then after that it works?

And after all these years they never patched this? WTF?

Oh well, I did like Diablo 1 and 2, (never tried 3, wasn't that the first one that required always on internet or something?? I remember some DRM reason for not even trying 3) and lots of reviews said it was like a Diablo clone, which there are many I know, but this one did sound interesting. Thank you. I think I will give it a try and give that trick of yours a try, and if unhappy I'll just eat the three bucks this time as I'm not asking for a refund for the same game twice. This is why I wanted to ask. Thanks you again, I think I will go ahead and get it while it's on sale.

ADDED: - Well shit. Now it's not on sale. I'm not spending $30 or $40 for a game with such issues. Never.

there's been a recent article, not sure about the source anymore, so much game talk in my feed that i tend to loose oversight unless the format is pretty recognizable, that managed to compare chaosbane with diablo.... well i only did the first couple of hours from the game and.. well it certainly did not feel anything compareable to diablo... the whole mission structure setup reminded me more of a game primairly aimed at the multiplayer. Maybe this changes later but... based on that first impression i would recommend Grim Dawn or if you must, Wh 40k Inquisitor

Yeah, at least that worked for me. Don't worry about the expired sale. The game is quite often on sale. It probably won't take long until it is on sale again.

If you are looking for other Diablo-likes I can recommend these, if you haven't played them already:

Titan Quest Anniversary Edition
Grim Dawn Definitive Edition
The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Final Cut
Victor Vran

None of them are on sale right now but the X-Mas sale should start in about a month though and some or maybe even all of them should be on sale then. :-)
