I don't seem to be able to get a gift code out of a free game. I can only redeem it. Can somebody explain to me how I get the code?

well usually you only get the gift code (then automatically) if you already own the given game b4 (meaning for free games you only get a gift code for "duplicate" games).
In some cases support may convert games/free games into gift codes if you ask them for it and have not downloaded/touched the game yet.

Redeem gives you gift code (into your e-mail account) if you already have the game in your account. Otherwise it adds the game to your account.
