I doubt people actually do that. More likely, they buy it for the Steam cards.

No. Heard of people who buy games in super cheap bundles to get the Steam trading card, but never heard of people buying cheap games to get the achievements.

I buy games on GOG whenever I can to avoid using a client at all, so you can guess how much I care about achievements.

Though I did do pacifist runs of the Dishonored and Deus Ex games, just 'cause it seemed like a cool challenge.

Of course they do. There are tons of trophy hunter sites. To some that's the only reason, I am totally sure of it. If not for the achievements alone, than they stay way longer to get the 100% or a platinum. Even if it means to keep going, despite having any real fun with the game anymore (don't ask me why though).

There are even people who pay others to get your achievements... And people who earn money that way.

Another example: There are people, who don't speak a word japanese, but they get a platinum on VN's on PS4 (in only a few hours, skipping all text). Tell me, what they are looking for, if not for achievements. Guides are written with directions, to keep the answers going.

And to be honest - achievements are adding a bit of value to a game. If I really like a game, I might consider staying longer to get them all. Though that's happening not so often anymore.

I never bought a game for achievements. It's a nice feature, but to buy a game for them? Nah... It happened a few times however that I modified my style of play just to get one particular achievement. But mostly I use offline installers here on GOG, so I'm not even aware when an achievement pops out (or if it pops out at all).

Sure, there definitely are people who care a lot about achievements, even "no achievements no buy" people, but the question was about buying cheap games just for the achievements, and I can't imagine that many people do that. After all, you'd still have to play these games in order to get the achievements. Achievements can add more fun to a game you enjoy but they don't automatically make a bad game fun and worth playing, and I don't think anyone is interested in bragging rights for shovelware games that noone knows or cares about. I'd say there has to be a certain interest in the actual game as well, not just the achievements (contrary to cards which only require you to run the game in the background, not to play it).

Achievements are a false sense of accomplishing something your really not. Never understood the accomplishment of that, but hey, what do I know :)

Probably no one will buy a game on GOG for the achievements alone. On console do you have some benefits of being higher level profile, like discounts etc or is just like Steam (higher level means little, beside the higher friend available slots)?

I've never paid for a game solely because of its achievements. I've said it elsewhere, but I look at them as an extra incentive to continue playing a game past the normal run of it.

Some developers get creative with them and others just include them out of a sense of obligation to do so. Other developers completely miss the point of them and some even utilize them to exploit or otherwise abuse the player and then wonder why said players get upset when talking about aspects of their game(s) either casually or in reviews.

With the cases of the shovelware you've brought up, often just starting the game can unlock anywhere from 1 to 2,000+ achievements so the definition of "play" becomes quite blurry.
