The DRM-free initiative.

We've always been on a mission to offer you games with no DRM protection whatsoever. Today, we want to start taking things a step further, help out people who bought a retail game with DRM, then ended up stuck with something rather unplayable. We can help you enjoy your favorites once again, and this time around, enjoy them DRM-free!

There are countless retail games out there that don’t work for various reasons: unsupported types of DRM, system incompatibilities, broken features. There's too many too count. Starting today, owners of several retail titles originally sold with DRM can get a digital copy of their game completely free at GOG.com: with no DRM as always, compatible with modern operating systems, and with plenty of goodies to boot.
<span class="bold">Reclaim these games, DRM-FREE:</span>

Editions released worldwide:
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

Editions released only in CIS & Russian territories:
-Mount & Blade: Warband
-Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword
-Eador: Genesis

To reclaim your game, just use one of the keys that came with your box. You can find more detailed information on the Reclaim your games, DRM-FREE! page to see if your key is compatible and just where to go from there.

This is just the start of something much bigger. We plan to add more titles to the list in the future - it's a long and complicated process that involves negotiating with multiple parties and a scavenger hunt to retrieve forgotten key-databases - but then, we are on a mission here, we'll do whatever it takes.

Rottencorpsex: I just got an email from GOG stuff that the reclaim is now fixed. Try it ppl and see if it works. Worked for me.
I've tried it even before read your comment and it works. I confirm that :)
Well, the retail codes from M&B warband and Fire and sword don't work for me, but I'm faaaairly certain I invalidated them because I probably already redeemed them on Steam. And steam codes don't work eiter, a herp derp :)

Anyway, this is a great thing you did, GOG people, thank you all the same.
My code for Shadow of Chernobyl keeps returning an 'invalid code' error when I try to redeem. Is there any help I can get on that?
If your key comes from a Steam copy, maybe because GOG doesn't have it in its registry (I have the same message for my Steam copy of Call of Pripyat) and you can't reclaim it.
This initiative is for retail box only !
A lot of people end up trying to redeem the actual Steam key and it fails and they think their game can't be redeemed here. It is not the Steam key that is used to redeem the game here however. The correct key to use is found by clicking on the game in the library "detailed view" and then looking on the right hand side menu where you'll see a "CDKEY" entry. That key is the key used to redeem it on GOG.

Oddly enough, I just went to my Steam account to bring up the game to confirm the exact steps and the game is no longer in my Steam account. I'm not sure why it is not there, but perhaps when you redeem it on GOG there is back channel talk going on through the company and they initiate removing it from your Steam account behind the scenes so you only have one copy on GOG afterward. I can't think of any other reason it would disappear from Steam, but it could also just be a strange coincidence.

I'll probably contact Steam support to try to get an answer though.

Update: It *IS* in my library, I'm just dumb. It is alphabetized as "S.T.A.L.K.E.R" so it shows above "Sa...." and I didn't notice it, and when I tried to filter by typing "stalk" I got nothing... duh. So the game did not get removed afterall.

Not true, I didn't buy the retail box. I got a key for the game from Humble bundle or similar and registered it on Steam, then later reclaimed it here on GOG via the CDKEY as per above.

You partially wrong. The initiative was for retail boxes only, but because GOG also added some cd-keys from Steam copies, some of them work and some other don't. That's why some people can reclaim a GOG copy from a Steam cd-key.

But it's true that you have to redeem your Steam key on a Steam account first, then to try the cd-key (which is not the same than the Steam key) on the reclaim page on GOG.

All I know is that I did not have a retail box key but a regular Steam key and the CDKEY associated with that worked on GOG and many other people have done so as well (who have commented earlier in the thread too). I also know that some people try to redeem the actual Steam key and it doesn't work and they claim theirs doesn't work because some people who have said that have had others ask them if they were redeeming the Steam key or the CDKEY and after the conversation that followed it turned out they were trying to redeem the incorrect key. Once they were shown the correct key to use they tried it and it worked.

It may or may not work for some people because not all copies of the game will work apparently, but it works for more people than think it does due to the common mistake people make of trying to use the same key used to redeem the game on Steam which is not the right key to use. :)

Well, my Steam keys for Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat worked, so I guess the issue probably lies in the CD Key database that GOG has?

Either way, of it isn't updated, I'll only end up buying it sometime in the future, so I guess it's not really a problem.
Huh. My Stalker games don't have CD keys listed in my client...? Oh well.

For the first game of the series (Shadow of Chernobyl), you can retrieve the CD key in the registry.  The game must be installed first :

❶  Open the Windows Registry Editor  ( regedit.exe )

❷  Navigate to the following key :

     ▪  64-bit Windows :   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\GSC Game World\STALKER-SHOC
     ▪  32-bit Windows :   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GSC Game World\STALKER-SHOC

❸  Look for the " InstallCDKEY " value to get your CD key.

I only own Clear Sky currently, but want to get Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat in the future also. If I end up with the Steam versions of the games, I'll definitely try the reclaim feature to see if it works though as it'd be preferred to own them here. They don't seem to go on sale here very often though, but do seem to go on sale or in bundle promos for Steam often so it's more likely to get Steam versions even unintentionally through bundles over time. If I do get the Steam versions somehow in the future though and they don't redeem here with the reclaim thing that's ok too. I'd still consider buying them here for a good enough discount later on anyway to have DRM-free copies for longevity.
Can I reclaim Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl when I have the german boxed version?

Why don't you just try it.I reclaimed the call of pripyat german game here but still didn't try the shadow of chernobyl one which is also german.
I own all stalker games because back in 2009 i bought all 3 games in somekind of collection which had all these games.Just use your cd key which is supposed to be on the back of the manual.
Also i am waiting for a pc so i can play these games again.
