The DRM-free initiative.

We've always been on a mission to offer you games with no DRM protection whatsoever. Today, we want to start taking things a step further, help out people who bought a retail game with DRM, then ended up stuck with something rather unplayable. We can help you enjoy your favorites once again, and this time around, enjoy them DRM-free!

There are countless retail games out there that don’t work for various reasons: unsupported types of DRM, system incompatibilities, broken features. There's too many too count. Starting today, owners of several retail titles originally sold with DRM can get a digital copy of their game completely free at GOG.com: with no DRM as always, compatible with modern operating systems, and with plenty of goodies to boot.
<span class="bold">Reclaim these games, DRM-FREE:</span>

Editions released worldwide:
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat

Editions released only in CIS & Russian territories:
-Mount & Blade: Warband
-Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword
-Eador: Genesis

To reclaim your game, just use one of the keys that came with your box. You can find more detailed information on the Reclaim your games, DRM-FREE! page to see if your key is compatible and just where to go from there.

This is just the start of something much bigger. We plan to add more titles to the list in the future - it's a long and complicated process that involves negotiating with multiple parties and a scavenger hunt to retrieve forgotten key-databases - but then, we are on a mission here, we'll do whatever it takes.

Great, GOG! You're so kind.
Oh cool, my S.T.A.L.K.E.R is in my library!:-)...thank you.

jimrad1: Entered my steam key and it worked only for one title out of all those offered. Only problem is it also charged me 2.49 automatically. That is not cool.
avatar
deonast: You didn't get charged. As others have noted it just shows you the current value of the game on the receipt / email, you aren't paying that (it is odd as a normal gift code redemption puts down $0 as the value but no matter). If you buy games here regularly you'd know there are more steps to the payment process, so you can't get billed by mistake.
Due to a bug in the way they processed redemptions, I was charged $9.99 in store credit. It's possible that jimrad1 had a similar issue. I contacted support, its a known issue, and apparently the charge should be reversed soon.

rejzor: For me, only Shadow of Chernobyl doesn't work. Clear Sky and Call od Prypiat worked fine. Either database GOG got is incomplete or Steam was selling out codes that vary from online to retail codes on the random. Which is dumb now that I have 2 games on GOG, but can't have the first one. Ugh.
Trade you SoC for SPAZ?

GOG version of SPAZ?

You may not want to but I'll offer it as my box copy was sitting around for a few years and they say it can be redeemed. I tested it out, but I already owned it and it seems it behaves like a gift code. As in, I cannot redeem a gift item as a gift item...as it is already considered uh, a gift item code? That make any sense?

PM me the SPAZ code whenever, should you want to trade and I'll send you the Soc code next time I'm on here. =D
Maybe tomorrow or the day after.
I redeemed Shadow of Chernobyl and Call of Pripyat from Steam. Thank you!
Crap cakes...even when I get something cool, nobody will trade -_-

I stand corrected, that is bad . Looks like GOG need to add some test suite scenarios before they start new promos to cover these sort of glitches.
Damn I threw out my boxed Stalker recently. Wouldn't have played it again anyway

This is a great announcement. I don't expect much from it, but on the other hand I didn't expect anything like this to be introduced.

I'm sure it will cost GOG some sales. Sometimes buying the game a second time from GOG is the easiest way to get compatibility fixes and easy access. But I've also lost track of the number of times I've seen an attractive bundle deal and passed on it because I don't want extra copies of games I've bought and played. It's generous of GOG to make their own package available for download based on previous ownership. But it's also a good way to draw more people to GOG and encourage bundle buying.

If this really takes off, maybe Steam and other competition will start offering the same service. Whatever comes of it, I don't see any way that it would hurt the customer experience. Thanks for the new initiative. I hope it grows big and strong.
What's the downside to this? There's gotta be a catch, eh?
many thx GOG :)

Sorry, I just assumed that GOG had this game listed as "SPAZ" XD

I forgot it has a real name ;)
entered my serial # from stalker s.o.c. box and it didn't work. not really worried about it. last patch for stalker s.o.c. removed the drm from the physical copy iirc.

it'd be cool if I could redeem them here. maybe I'm doing something wrong???
