I remembered this thread a while ago and was honestly surprised that it went without being bumped for so long (a few weeks). I'd be curious what percentage of the 140 pages is people debating or arguing.

I mean, boycotting is a long-term thing right, like others have said? Unless only a tiny percentage of GOG's userbase is boycotting?

mrkgnao: My reasons for boycotting:
(1) GOG does not indicate which games contain single-player elements that require galaxy or an online presence (e.g. Absolver, CP2077), making it impossible to buy client-free games with confidence (I don't care whether or not they sell such games, I just want to know which, so I can avoid them) --- Status: Still waiting for GOG to add some indication of this, e.g. via a search filter or game page field.
That would be great. I would love for them to do that with multiplayer support as well. Atm, its annoying to have to do the research.

I personally have ZERO interest in playing with people online (and also, I install the standalone installers anyways, so I couldn't even if I wanted to).

However, I'm very interested in either hosting LAN parties or playing with game controllers on the same screen with friends and family. However, even when a game indicates a multiplayer or coop support, there is no indication whatever as to whether that use case is supported. Its a sorry state of affairs.

Its funny, in a way. Occasionally, I'll see a developer post that they "only" support same-screen multiplayer as opposed to online due to development constraints, but for me, that is actually a better experience. I can work with same-screen. I can't work with online-only.

mrkgnao: I thought I'd keep a record of GOG games I would definitely have bought, were it not for my boycott.
How many games have you bought here on Gog or have you always boycotted Gog right from the start?
GOG has lost sight of their initial goal and philosophy. It's disappointing to see, but I pretty much gave up on these guys as soon as I saw GOG Galaxy come around. I don't even buy games here anymore. Steam needs a really good competitor, but it won't be GOG. CD Projekt went down the shitter starting with The Witcher 3 and it's only going to get worse.

I currently have (according to GOG's count) 1849 games. I have spent more than $7,000 on games for myself, not including gifts to others and giveaways I ran. From 2009 to 2020 I have only bought games on GOG, nowhere else.

its been my experience that corporations arent catering to their old heavy buyers and focus on new incoming customers as they make more money. my spending had decreased to almost nothing after buying hundreds of game here on gog and i bet that alot of us that have huge libraries have slowed as well. so marketing isnt going to be for 'us' and will be on marketing strategies that keep them in the profit zone for as long as possible.

ive bought a few games on gog recently after a long time off, super deals stuff. maybe 20bucks worth. ive also spent a much larger sum in other stores, mainly steam for mod workshop connections, availability and ease of multiplayer. gog really lags behind in those things as well as updates. ive bought on epic, a tidy sum. im fully aware that those games i buy elsewhere arent mine which saddens me slightly but my avarice to collect as many games as possible has slowed to only
wanting to keep games i love. if its a game i really really want to keep and if its offered on gog ill buy a second copy. so far none have caught my attention and i gladly uninstall them after playing.

it used to be gog only, but ive moved on. it took a long while, yrs of growing dissatisfaction, mainly how its lost its sense of small community and the increased demands of profit profit profit, constant garish unwieldy sales, cyberpunk hard sell, etc.

im glad of my library but in the end its just a storefront and if its not serving its purpose anymore ill buy elsewhere. which i have done
I give up.
For a game costing less than a dollar, but still. I'd like to be moved to the "sympathetic" column, please.

Some of the issues addressed here I fully understand and agree with. But because of some nonsensical issues, that are also included, I can't really sympathise with this.

I had... reservations as well since the beginning, my gripes were mostly about lack of transparency, blatant lies (including DRM) and general disrespect of their customers' intelligence. Never cared much about the Devotion debacle.

not going to read 141 pages of posts regarding this, however, it's all about money.
Steam did it too over the last few years. I came to GoG to avoid their drama. GoG has less drama.

Both are making these moves (as per OP) due to financial gain. it is simple as that. The good news, we don't have to use GoG.. The ones that kept the DRM, are probably offering GoG a higher kickback. Same thing steam did - by making users go to dev sites to log in, and register making purchasing games on steam moot.

Pick your battles :-)

Yes, I won't read the 57 pages (I setup 50 posts per page) either to be sadly honest: I noticed the boycott like 4 months ago and one of my pending tasks since then had been to read all the thread to fully understand and express my position. I confess up to day I only read like the first 3 pages where there is a lot of discussion about the Devotion thing, where I understand both sides: Time4Tea strong position about it as a clear precedent of censorship but also the counter arguments saying gog as business is just following the money... As I am not a hard core gamer, in my ignorance I don't know anything about the Devotion game and it is not my favorite genre, so, as you say, I wouldn't fight that battle heroically on the front line, but I certainly have allergy to the censorship and not being a GOG investor I don't feel any sympathy for their capitalist preference...
The thing is after 4 months I never found the time/courage to read all the thread, but I don't need it to recognize and thank all this 98 + 32 public people because wanted or not, their actions are defending my rights as the customers all we are.
Why I dont express at least my sympathy then? Because I'm affraid a boycott needs much more logistics (meetings outside gog to clarify doubts & really confirm the group is under the same page, agree & even adjust the demands list, follow up the plan, etc.) which certainly mean a much higher participation & commitment of the signants to the cause. And if you grant me this wish, it certainly should scare out the sh*t from me...
So, I am in a dead zone (called paralysis by choice?)
Sorry Time4Tea for filling up this thread even more with this lenghty (¿¿reasoning??) post that produces zero. As I said, meetings could clarify my concerns and would allow to expose my point of view, generate an empathy (or the opposite, because we cant overlook that option also exist) as a fast track compared to exchanging AxB posts here (where GOG & the opponents are easily watching over, and I hope you understand what I mean: nothing bad or evil to hide, but a key point in any negotiation is always privacy & secrecy)
My respect for you guys stands and please know that your effort is not ignored or overlooked by this passive (¿?) customer. Regards

Felt like updating. I'm still boycotting GOG, they didn't get a cent from me for 7 months.
I've also done my best to voice my disappointment by reccomending other people to avoid it at the best of my abilities.
Stil very glad about it. Still think that GOG has acted extremely hypocritical by saying some things and doing the exact opposite. Would have much preferred if they were honest about the whole situation.
Cheers.

P.S. Also quick reminder that you can buy Devotion DRM-free directly from the creators. Not gonna link here out to respect for GOG (even if I think GOG was anything but respectful towards the developers, I'm not GOG).
