When I was young, my mother used to tell me "Bored people are boring people". Advice to live by.

Being left in the car by my parents while they went shopping.
In their defense, it was usually winter, so no danger of heatstroke etc.; I was locked in with my siblings (maybe that should be put in the "cruel and unusual punishment" column) and we were all old enough to be cognizant of the reasons why.
Herding three young children on crowded streets was a nightmare waiting to happen. Babysitters were something other people and movies did. So, we got locked in the car and left to amuse ourselves. Which we did by making dead bodies of ourselves for passers by to admire.
They never actually left us with anything to amuse ourselves with, no books etc., so after a while, we were usually really, really, really bored. And children's time senses being what they are - what seemed like centuries to us was probably only a couple of hours.
To this day, I never go anywhere without something to involve myself with, and it's usually multiple things. :)
