Join the team behind Bombshell for a special forum Q&A session!

We have invited two guys from the team behind Bombshell to come to the forums and answer all your pressing questions! The creators of the top-down explosive RPG will be hanging out with us here from 6pm GMT to 8pm GMT, but - as always - we’re giving you a head-start on asking questions.

Visiting the GOG.com forums, we've got:

Scott Miller (ScottMiller3DR)
-- The founder of 3D Realms and currently an adviser for the company.
-- In the past, he has worked on Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem, Max Payne, Shadow Warrior, and more.

Fred Schreiber (freschism)
-- CEO at Indie developer Interceptor, and the Vice President at 3D Realms.
-- He has been working on games all of his life, from Rise of the Triad to - currently - Bombshell.

Now that we’ve gotten introduced to our guests, here are some ground rules for this Q&A to work as smoothly as possible:

1. Not all questions might get answered during the Q&A, but feel free to read along!
2. Be nice. No abuse, harassment, name-calling and the like.
3. Don’t spam. This will help keep the thread legible and keep our guests involved.

Let’s get this show on the road!

AlienMind: The gist of what I heard from diverse posts, also from one employee was: He was an unfocused perfectionist, which had to go the way of the dinosaur in todays complexity. But I think we can both agree that all he did was trying to make the best game possible.
The only company I see major sucking concerning duke is Gearbox. THIS company shat out the remains of the game without fixing even the bread and butter core stuff of a shooter, like the low enemy animations. Not George. And then they fixed NOTHING and hid all the servers and modding tools behind DRM until DNF died for good.
Even if some of Interceptors ROTT2013 was not finished at release (e.g. server binaries would not work), they fixed it post release and released MANY content patches for it. And it had modding tools and no DRM.
Not again with this bullshit, we have to stop giving fault at random. Gearbox has done as much as they can to release that mess of DNF, you can't turn SHIT into GOLD even if you work hard for it, they should have remade the game from the beginning and scrap that mess 3Drealms made. Are you really convinced that Gearbox has developed most of DNF? NO WAY, Gearbox has had the guts to release it and people are giving shit to them instead of that idiot of Broussard, you're misinformed, check your info better, it's not like that. People still don't understand that DNF was a mess since the beginning, Gearbox shouldn't have messed up with them in the first place, end of the story. After 5 years people still didn't understood about the Gearbox role in DNF, really, people, wake up for once.

Hi, good to see you releasing the game on GOG! Do you plan to release the game for Linux and what are your thoughts about Linux gaming in general? Thanks!

UPDATE: I see you already answered that :) Then a different one - what do you think about Vulkan? And do think it will be able to break through the industry lock-in mentality (i.e. walled garden APIs by MS, Apple, Sony, Nintendo and etc.)?

Also a comment about demographics - Linux market isn't small anymore. And it's actively growing.

Winterdawn: Ok Scott and Fred you've released another game that sucks under the 3DReals name, how do you feel stealing money from people giving them such bad games? Do you feel good? Isn't time to change job and stop making games given the fact that you aren't able to make them anymore?

Or you'll keep releasing these shitty games for other 20 years? I just want to know, here all the users didn't have the guts to tell you this, but I do, STOP RELEASING THIS SHIT!!!!

YOU SHOULD HAVE KICKED IN THE ASS THAT INCOMPETENT OF GEORGE BROUSSARD YEARS AGO, HE HAS DESTROYED A GREAT COMPANY LIKE 3DREALMS, IT WAS A MULTIMILLIONAIRE COMPANY LIKE ID Software, YOU'VE ALLOWED THAT IDIOT BY DESTROYING AND REDUCING IN BANKRUPT A SUCCESSFUL COMPANY LIKE 3DRealms, now from this company comes out only shit, I repeat, YOU SHOULD HAVE KICKED IN THE ASS THAT IDIOT OF BROUSSARD ( You and the other team members) YEARS AGO, the most incompetent CEO/Founder I've ever seen in my life. Oh, finally, it's been years I wanted to say that and finally I did it. This is what I think. Sorry.

freschism: I wondered when trolls would show up. The tone was suspiciously sober. Next! :)

ALaggyGrunt: Is there any chance of a Linux build?
avatar
freschism: Hi there! This was just answered on the previous page. Thank's for the question! :)
Fuck to those have rated my post low, you fucking idiots. Really, are you that dumb too? Does Broussard pays your bill? It's an incompetent assholes, and I'm a troll, say troll to another one you idiot too. Keep up on releasing shitty games, come on, keep up. In any case people will buy it regardless. Troll, but go to hell you and 3Drealms, and thank Broussard for that, thank him for ruining a great company. We have two puppets here people, really.
Can you buy Will Rock and Nitro IPs to reboot these oldschool FPS games?

MauroR: ...
I often heard this argument before but honestly I disagree; You cannot turn shit in to gold that's true... but on the other side if it's shit then you shouldn't release it! Personally I don't blame Gearbox for "making" shit, I blame them for "releasing" it.

Yes most likely DNF was a mess long before Gearbox got their hands on it, but it is Gearbox who decided to release it in that state and it has nothing with having "guts" but everything with wanting to make a quick buck out of the license regardless if the game was in a releasable state or not. (Something they did, again, a bunch of years later with Alien colonial marines.)
Will Interceptor ever make an original IP, or just remake old ones?
can you vote my petition for GOG?
http://www.gog.com/wishlist/site/hire_hideo_kojima

why I wasn't selected as a beta tester? :(

Do you liked Duke Nukem Forever ?

I think I'm late for a question, but:
When I played Duke Nukem 3d for the firs time, like 5 years ago, I was amazed by the non linear approach, the fact that you could play the game the way you wanted, exploration was fun and an important and rewarded mechanic and the personality of the character was very important.

Why do you think there are so few games whit these characteristics?
Do you try to put them in your games?
if not, why?

I just remembered why I stopped reading reviews, specially from gamespot, If a game wasn't a halo clone, I wouldn't receive a good score.

Zeanix: Hey, any chance we might see another old school shooter from Intercepter like Rise of the Triad in the future?

Hilsen en dansk fan :)

freschism: Hopefully! We have something brewing atm. that's related to another classic IP from the 1998 era.
Stay tuned!
I know this event is wrapped up, but this is exciting.

I've been a fan of Apogee/3D Realms since the beginning. I have most games in the original boxed format on floppies and CD. I snapped up the 3D Realms Anthology from your site directly as well as from Steam and hope it comes to GOG as well. Bombshell has excited me since I first heard of it and I've been counting down the days to its release. I'm really sorry to see the early reviews it has received, especially coming from copies provided prior to release which had over 200 bugs that were fixed for release. It's unfortunate, but maybe these early copies should be updated more before release so as to not affect scores and sales so much? Easier said than done I suppose when you don't want to delay the game more than it already was. Either way, I've purchased the Deluxe Edition of this game and can't wait to start playing it. I wish you all the best at 3D Realms and look forward to buying all your future releases. :)

You need to understand that different people have different opinions that you, so calm down with your mis-directed anger and calls for violence. You are being intolerant and rude. There are places on the internet to vent your anger and call people names, they're called Twitter and Facebook. A developer Q&A is not a good platform, therefore you come across as a troll.

I for one loved a lot that George Broussard brought to the gaming landscape of the 90s. DNF was a running joke in the gaming industry, and its sad that Gearbox released the version of DNF that they did because that game could have been much better. I put that on Randy Pitchford, not George Broussard. I still enjoyed DNF but it wasn't nearly as good as it could have been, with the biggest problem being the claustrophobic level design that was part-and-parcel of 3D-shooters of the 2000s.

ZORGGR: Hi : D

Scott might remember me from facebook (Stergios)...

I haven't bought the game yet but I will do in the coming days... But from what I've seen it doesn't look like a 2/10 game. Seriously... It seems to me that since the release of DNF they want to shutdown 3D Realms by calling every game released with the 3D Realms logo on it, the worst game of the decade or the worst game ever and shit like that.

Let's hope sales won't be affected for wrong reasons...

ScottMiller3DR: I think some reviewers were affect by three key factors:

[1] They were expected Sci-Fi Diablo, and instead got a top-down shooter with RPG-lite features. Partially our fault, because we called Bombshell an "action RPG", not realizing that we'd be mistaken for being a Diablo-style game but with more action.

[2] The game definitely has several difficulty spikes that turned out to be much harder than we anticipated. Note that we are racing to fix this asap.

[3] The version of the game that was reviewed still had 200 bugs/glitches that were NOT in the released version on Steam. So, we were unfairly dinged for having bugs that were only in the review copies, given out a week before release.

My hope is that players will play the game and see that it's not anything like the lower review scores we've gotten. IMO, the game is a solid 7 at worse. It's not a Game of the Year contender, but it's super solid high-action fun with a lot of nice features and gameplay that is rarely seen nowadays.
Scott I think you BROKE it update quick! Hi Scott and Fred. I'm a big fan of 3DR classics. Any chance of getting a new Blake Stone game? I played the sh... outta that game back in the old days and recently rediscovered it here in GOG DRM-free. A new installment would be nice

I actually have equal blame for both Broussard as well as Pitchford. Broussard just got too greedy and kept stringing along DNF for all its worth. How the hell can you justify developing a game for over a decade and still say "It wasn't ready"? You HAD all the time in the world and you couldn't just stop at one point and say, "Ok guys, let's stick with this engine and these levels." Instead, he just kept it milking this game for all its worth and he had the balls to say he was upset and started to cry when 2K decided to pull the plug, come on....

Granted, I don't like Pitchford or Gearbox that much either, they are terrible as well but did you really expect this over-a-decade dry turd of a game to be any good at this point? Please.

DNF should not have been released. Period. It should have died at this point. The publisher wanted to recoup on its expenses, which is understandable. I'm not sure that any of the DNF iterations beyond the original Quake engine one would have been good, but I bet that any of the earlier iterations would have been better than the shit Gearbox released. Also, as for Broussard vs Pitchford, Broussard actually helped shape the gaming landscape of the 90s, so he has legacy and therefore some of my respect, where as Gearbox hasn't given gaming anything that I respect at all.
