Join the team behind Bombshell for a special forum Q&A session!

We have invited two guys from the team behind Bombshell to come to the forums and answer all your pressing questions! The creators of the top-down explosive RPG will be hanging out with us here from 6pm GMT to 8pm GMT, but - as always - we’re giving you a head-start on asking questions.

Visiting the GOG.com forums, we've got:

Scott Miller (ScottMiller3DR)
-- The founder of 3D Realms and currently an adviser for the company.
-- In the past, he has worked on Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem, Max Payne, Shadow Warrior, and more.

Fred Schreiber (freschism)
-- CEO at Indie developer Interceptor, and the Vice President at 3D Realms.
-- He has been working on games all of his life, from Rise of the Triad to - currently - Bombshell.

Now that we’ve gotten introduced to our guests, here are some ground rules for this Q&A to work as smoothly as possible:

1. Not all questions might get answered during the Q&A, but feel free to read along!
2. Be nice. No abuse, harassment, name-calling and the like.
3. Don’t spam. This will help keep the thread legible and keep our guests involved.

Let’s get this show on the road!
Is there any chance of a Linux build?

... whoops, that's what I get for leaving the reply box open for 30 minutes for poking around elsewhere.

Winterdawn: Ok Scott and Fred you've released another game that sucks under the 3DReals name, how do you feel stealing money from people giving them such bad games? Do you feel good? Isn't time to change job and stop making games given the fact that you aren't able to make them anymore?

Or you'll keep releasing these shitty games for other 20 years? I just want to know, here all the users didn't have the guts to tell you this, but I do, STOP RELEASING THIS SHIT!!!!

YOU SHOULD HAVE KICKED IN THE ASS THAT INCOMPETENT OF GEORGE BROUSSARD YEARS AGO, HE HAS DESTROYED A GREAT COMPANY LIKE 3DREALMS, IT WAS A MULTIMILLIONAIRE COMPANY LIKE ID Software, YOU'VE ALLOWED THAT IDIOT BY DESTROYING AND REDUCING IN BANKRUPT A SUCCESSFUL COMPANY LIKE 3DRealms, now from this company comes out only shit, I repeat, YOU SHOULD HAVE KICKED IN THE ASS THAT IDIOT OF BROUSSARD ( You and the other team members) YEARS AGO, the most incompetent CEO/Founder I've ever seen in my life. Oh, finally, it's been years I wanted to say that and finally I did it. This is what I think. Sorry.
I wondered when trolls would show up. The tone was suspiciously sober. Next! :)

Watching the review from LGR, I feel that Bombshell kind of dropped the ball in the environment creation, something that even Clint mentions in his video. One of the biggest selling points of Duke 3D (even Forever and some of the console spin offs) for me was the urban environments I got to fight in, as well as interact with the various objects.

Except the first level (if I'm wrong please correct me), Bombshell takes place in what seems to be alien/sci-fi/fantasy environments that to be honest look generic at best. I saw a couple of levels that could well be from a run of the mill hack n slash title like DIablo or Torchlight.

I mean think of Duke 3D. Everyone remembers the adult store, the strip club, the movie theater, the battle at the football stadium, the canyon level, the prison level, but watching videos and trailers I don't get any of that vibe from Bombshell.

Again it's my opinion and I will probably buy the game just to support the team, but at the end I think 3D Realms had the chance to create something memorable and (i hate the term but...) failed.

I agree, I enjoyed Torchlight but honestly have very little interest in sci-fi fantasy settings. I hope we'll see another FPS set in an current-day urban or even suburban setting (FEAR 3 had some of this, like going through suburban houses and a "big box" store).

My question would be unrelated to Bombshell, but perhaps there's a chance it'll get answered: will GOGgers ever see the "missing" 3D Realms games (like in Steam's anthology) show up here, like the DOS version of Raptor or Death Rally? Thanks for Bio Menace of course!

ZORGGR: Hi : D

Scott might remember me from facebook (Stergios)...

I haven't bought the game yet but I will do in the coming days... But from what I've seen it doesn't look like a 2/10 game. Seriously... It seems to me that since the release of DNF they want to shutdown 3D Realms by calling every game released with the 3D Realms logo on it, the worst game of the decade or the worst game ever and shit like that.

Let's hope sales won't be affected for wrong reasons...

ScottMiller3DR: I think some reviewers were affect by three key factors:

[1] They were expected Sci-Fi Diablo, and instead got a top-down shooter with RPG-lite features. Partially our fault, because we called Bombshell an "action RPG", not realizing that we'd be mistaken for being a Diablo-style game but with more action.

[2] The game definitely has several difficulty spikes that turned out to be much harder than we anticipated. Note that we are racing to fix this asap.

[3] The version of the game that was reviewed still had 200 bugs/glitches that were NOT in the released version on Steam. So, we were unfairly dinged for having bugs that were only in the review copies, given out a week before release.

My hope is that players will play the game and see that it's not anything like the lower review scores we've gotten. IMO, the game is a solid 7 at worse. It's not a Game of the Year contender, but it's super solid high-action fun with a lot of nice features and gameplay that is rarely seen nowadays.
To tell you the truth... I stopped paying attention to reviews years ago... And basically I never cared what a site review said. Just write down a few words and damage a company and people who worked on a game. I mean really... 2/10?
A 6/10 would be nice considering you are not totally bashing a game but you indeed critisize it. A 2/10 won't help a developer learn from the mistakes but it seems like its aimed only at causing damage to the developer. 2/10 or 3/10 is like you are saying "don't play that game even if they pay you". Damn reviews are so full of shit these days : P

p.s.
Are those the same guys that give call of duty a 9.5/10 every 1-2 years?

p.s.2
txcforever, are you Greek Cypriot : P ?

Here's a question I posted in another thread about patching and I am curious what you think about that situation:

You have recently released a game, and that game has sold fairly well. Somebody finds a bug in the game, and posts a youtube video demonstrating the bug in action, and it is actually rather hilarious. Furthermore, the bug isn't something someone would likely encounter in normal play.

Do you:
1. Release a patch that fixes (or at least attempts to fix) the bug, or
2. Intentionally leave the bug in the game?

Just as a sidenote, for me it was the other way around. I saw the screenshots and they reminded me of games like Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death or Shadowgrounds/Alien Shooter/Alien Swarm/Alien Breed. Then I suddenly read "Action RPG" everywhere - here on GOG as well, and I was confused because that was not what I had expected from it. Good to hear that my first impression wasn't that wrong and that it's not really another Diablo-clone!

I would argue that companies should stop calling games "RPG"s unless the game plays like one, with actions being governed by stats and random numbers instead of player skill. As it is, the term RPG is overused, which makes the term useless when deciding if it's a game a person would like.
Hello, 3DR and Interceptor guys/gals
Having a blast with Bombshell. I am very relieved to see it's not as buggy as the review copies were and I think the difficulty is pretty fair so far but an easy mode for the kidz is probably gonna help.

My question is whether you have a co-op mode in mind or if it's something you're considering for any future projects?

Tquilaonfire: Hi Guys,

You may recognize me as one of the testers (Dennis). Congratulations once again on the release. How do you feel the critique especially regarding the story of the game, and the gameplay being boring? Did you miss the "cheesy" Duke Nukem comedy, or maybe got stuck in it and never got quite far enough away from it?

Also, while I know you (the entire team) is extremely passionate about nostalic gaming (Duke Nukem, C&C etc.) do you think it has been problematic you started out with the Duke Nukem approach, and maybe lingered with it too much in terms of Bombshell being an IP of it's own. I don't think with regards to the lawsuit and everything, but more in terms of game-play development and story development. Was the Duke Nukem ghost was haunting in the background or being a guiding angel?

Best Regards, and congratulations again

ScottMiller3DR:
Good questions, Dennis.

I think with regard to the story, anytime you have aliens attacking Earth, a female President with an American flag eye-patch, and a cyber-madman bad guy, there's probably going to be some cheese in the mix. We purposely went with an over-the-top storyline, because it's so hard to treat these types of stories with dead seriousness. We don't have the resources of a Naughty Dog or Rockstar, so we just do the best we can do.

The Duke Nukem comparisons are easy to make because Bombshell is fighting aliens like Duke does. But, I think Bombshell is a more interesting character in many important ways. For example, in Duke games, he goes around rescuing helpless "babes". In Duke's world, females are just there to be saved, and for him to have fun with. Bombshell, on the other hand, treats men as worthy team members, not as sexual fodder. In DNF, Duke sees a huge alien boss with three boobs in full view, and remarks, "I'd hit that." That may be the most juvenile line spoken in video game history--how did that get released!!?? Bombshell's speech will never come across so poorly.

I think you're right, though, that given this game's history, where we were making a Duke Nukem game originally, then had the rug pulled out from under us, that there was still some latent desire to make the original vision. Although, we consciously steered ourselves away from that as best we could.

Well ANY attempt at taking DNF even remotely seriously is just gonna end in tears and horrible Metacritic scores. I never got why people bashed that game so much, I had a lot of fun with it because of how uniquely juvenile it was. Absolutely tasteless trash but heck, that's what made it awesome.
That being said I am very grateful Bombshell is NOT just a female Duke Nukem clone. She does feel like her own character and I think you guys did a great job with her.

freschism: That might be part of the explanation. We didn't specifically think about the age of the average player when designing the game. But you do have a point, and it's actually not something we've been thinking about. It is a reflex heavy game, with a pretty steep difficulty. We'll add an easier mode to the game, in patch 1.1 :)
I think more it's possibly a new topic for dev, how design a game that young and old can enjoy. Not that all game should target them all, but some could try.

I don't think difficulty can solve it, I quoted the problem with many modern shooters, Easy is quickly leading to remove any spice. Just for the topic of speed and reflex I thought more about time scaling options. Eventually the game could offer some quick reflex tests to propose a setup to each old player.

It's probably too soon but I suppose that sooner or later such topic will become more pertinent, perhaps in 10 or 20 years. :-)

Regardless of the critique the game has received so far, and whether or not some of it is justified, I just wanted to thank you guys for releasing a DRM-free version of the game, and also for taking the time to chat with the GOG community and answer their questions.

I hope you'll manage to fix any legitimate flaws the game currently has, and make Bombshell a success for your company and your fans/customers alike, despite the rough start.
I actually used to date a woman who was the spitting image of the character in this screenshot (except blonde / strawberry blonde).

The fact that the one in the screenshot is making almost the exact same face I would frequently see is probably why that relationship ended ;)

But really from the structure of the chin, shape of the pursed mouth and size of the nose - even the ears - it's kinda uncanny. Plus, like I said... the face she's making - spot on! ;)

I too want to thank you for releasing this game here Day One, DRM free - it means a lot. I don't have a question per se, but more some "AAR" suggestions from someone who hasn't 1)played the game 2) read the reviews and 3) sort of had no clue about this game until it arrived here

The game Laura Croft and the Guardian of Light was incredibly well received and marketed as a pseudo-top down "twin stick" - esque shooter game with some Metroidvania elements. For what it was, I believe it was incredibly well reviewed and much loved.

Conversely, another game that stressed "Action RPG" with premium generation visuals and a strong action combat focus also failed to gain traction for "not finding its niche." That game was Too Human.

I think your marketing department would have been better served with comparisons to twin stick shooters and especially references to LC and the Guardian of Light. It would have caused your game to have a bit better identification and a more solid grounding in expectations, rather than people feeling a bit lost as to what to expect.

Regardless, I absolutely wish you the best! And maybe change the name if you think 3DRealms could be an issue with the review process in the future. Remember, haters always gonna hate! ;)

Winterdawn: ..BROUSSARD YEARS AGO, HE HAS DESTROYED A GREAT COMPANY ..
The gist of what I heard from diverse posts, also from one employee was: He was an unfocused perfectionist, which had to go the way of the dinosaur in todays complexity. But I think we can both agree that all he did was trying to make the best game possible.
The only company I see major sucking concerning duke is Gearbox. THIS company shat out the remains of the game without fixing even the bread and butter core stuff of a shooter, like the low enemy animations. Not George. And then they fixed NOTHING and hid all the servers and modding tools behind DRM until DNF died for good.
Even if some of Interceptors ROTT2013 was not finished at release (e.g. server binaries would not work), they fixed it post release and released MANY content patches for it. And it had modding tools and no DRM.
