Join the team behind Bombshell for a special forum Q&A session!

We have invited two guys from the team behind Bombshell to come to the forums and answer all your pressing questions! The creators of the top-down explosive RPG will be hanging out with us here from 6pm GMT to 8pm GMT, but - as always - we’re giving you a head-start on asking questions.

Visiting the GOG.com forums, we've got:

Scott Miller (ScottMiller3DR)
-- The founder of 3D Realms and currently an adviser for the company.
-- In the past, he has worked on Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem, Max Payne, Shadow Warrior, and more.

Fred Schreiber (freschism)
-- CEO at Indie developer Interceptor, and the Vice President at 3D Realms.
-- He has been working on games all of his life, from Rise of the Triad to - currently - Bombshell.

Now that we’ve gotten introduced to our guests, here are some ground rules for this Q&A to work as smoothly as possible:

1. Not all questions might get answered during the Q&A, but feel free to read along!
2. Be nice. No abuse, harassment, name-calling and the like.
3. Don’t spam. This will help keep the thread legible and keep our guests involved.

Let’s get this show on the road!

If you don't mind here's a second oldschool question of mine. How much of Blood was developed by 3D Realms before it was being worked on by Monolith? Thanks for answering.

The website is, tried using google and the result was the same.
Hi Guys,

You may recognize me as one of the testers (Dennis). Congratulations once again on the release. How do you feel the critique especially regarding the story of the game, and the gameplay being boring? Did you miss the "cheesy" Duke Nukem comedy, or maybe got stuck in it and never got quite far enough away from it?

Also, while I know you (the entire team) is extremely passionate about nostalic gaming (Duke Nukem, C&C etc.) do you think it has been problematic you started out with the Duke Nukem approach, and maybe lingered with it too much in terms of Bombshell being an IP of it's own. I don't think with regards to the lawsuit and everything, but more in terms of game-play development and story development. Was the Duke Nukem ghost was haunting in the background or being a guiding angel?

Best Regards, and congratulations again

It's been a while, but I'll guess that 50% of it was in place before we handed the rights to Monolith. Most of the story idea was laid out, the lead character, most of the weapons like the Voodoo Doll, and the enemies mostly. But there was still a lot of work to be done making levels, adding new tech to the engine, the GUI, and tons of polishing.

It'd be fun to make a new Blood game or a full reboot, but finding out exactly who owns the rights to that IP has not been an easy process, so I don't think there's a good chance to see Blood revived.

If it's a SiN or a Requiem type of deal it can score the hell it wants. I'm in*!!! ;D

*just like I was with Rott ;)
Hi team! Got a few questions:

1) Have you considered the possibility of a HD release of the classic ROTT, perhaps with a port for consoles, with all the content (map maker, H.U.N.T Begins, EROTT) bundled together?

2) What can we expect from the Bombshell Build engine prequel?

3) On a personal note, any franchises out there you'd like to get ahold of to remake? Perhaps C&C or Blood?

Thanks!

I'd LOVE to play a new Blood game. It was one of the best and funniest games I've ever played.

Hi Astroman9991!
1.We actually considered it at one point. Maybe in the future! Who knows :)

2. Expect at classic Build-Style shooter, with some cool tricks up it's sleeve!

3. We worked intensly on Blood, and even gathered the original team and founders of Q-Studios (The developers of Blood). Unfortunately due to licensing issues and ownership Blood is just not possible currently.

We would love to take a stab at C&C. Tiberian Dawn (The original 1996 classic), would do super well re-imagined to a modern audience. Starcraft need's a proper competitor! EA, you know how to get in touch! ;)

op2016: Will we see an FPS or other type of action game in the future with this female character as the main lead? Thank you.
avatar
ScottMiller3DR:
Definitely not! We hate the FPS genre!!!!

(Pausing for effect...)

J/K!!!

We DEFINITELY want to make future Bombshell games in the FPS genre, or TPS (third-person shooter). We haven't decided which way would be best yet--they both have pros and cons. There's a lot of ideas to explore, since she has a weaponized arm that can continue to improve through upgrades and mods.

Also, in future games we really want to emphasize one of her main talents, which is to blow stuff up. Big stuff, like at the end of a James Bomb film, where the bad guys secret headquarters is totally leveled. We'll be able to pull this off a lot better in an FPS/TPS style game, and we think it'll be a ton o' fun.

This is good to hear/read. Thanks :)
So questions for the developers -

1) What advice would you give a developer who is developing their first game?

2) Will future 3D Realms and Interceptor Games be developed on Unreal Engine 4? Now that it is out in the wild.

Good questions, Dennis.

I think with regard to the story, anytime you have aliens attacking Earth, a female President with an American flag eye-patch, and a cyber-madman bad guy, there's probably going to be some cheese in the mix. We purposely went with an over-the-top storyline, because it's so hard to treat these types of stories with dead seriousness. We don't have the resources of a Naughty Dog or Rockstar, so we just do the best we can do.

The Duke Nukem comparisons are easy to make because Bombshell is fighting aliens like Duke does. But, I think Bombshell is a more interesting character in many important ways. For example, in Duke games, he goes around rescuing helpless "babes". In Duke's world, females are just there to be saved, and for him to have fun with. Bombshell, on the other hand, treats men as worthy team members, not as sexual fodder. In DNF, Duke sees a huge alien boss with three boobs in full view, and remarks, "I'd hit that." That may be the most juvenile line spoken in video game history--how did that get released!!?? Bombshell's speech will never come across so poorly.

I think you're right, though, that given this game's history, where we were making a Duke Nukem game originally, then had the rug pulled out from under us, that there was still some latent desire to make the original vision. Although, we consciously steered ourselves away from that as best we could.
