Just have to increase the temperature slow enough and make sure the water is so huge... there is almost no chance of leaving all of a sudden.

For example: Steam is so huge (as a water, or game source) and it is being cooked so slowly... if you someday will notice the high temperature you can not even leave on time anymore; on GoG this is usually possible.

Maybe you notice is has been cooked so high, you start to gasp... yet no chance to move away anymore because all your water or all your games are immovable or simply to huge for leaving any quick.

Which goes completely against the metaphor. As the frog will then be trapped and unable to freely escape, which is how the whole (untrue) story was meant to play out. In that sense, you may as well put a lid on the pot of boiling water, and be done with it. Steamed frog anyone, one leg or two ?...

babark: "Boiling frog syndrome"
People really need to get aware, that there is no such thing as the "boiling frog syndrome".

A frog doesn't stay in the water until it gets so hot that it turns lethal.
The frog will leave the water, as soon as the temperature gets uncomfortable.

In the true spirit of science, this calls for an experiment!

Orkhepaj I command you leave this body that doesn't belong to you. Release Ancient-Red-Dragon's mind now. I cast thee away. Begone! BEGONE!

(In case someone doesn't know, Orkhepaj is the one user who most frequently complained about forum games)

No, the issue is: Even if you could theoretically leave, if you are dependable on water and you do not see any water outside of the boiling water, you may rather chose to slowly die.

However, the term was "very slow... very slow..." for example: The frog is inside the pot and the water is increasing in temp over a period of 1 week... and outside there is not any water by a mile... you know there is no way reaching any water outside any time soon. Then you may rather chose not to leave... even if you do not feel well anymore and perhaps at some point you will meet your demise.

So the matter is way more complicated than this... yet we are rarely able to think "out of our current scale". Of course the frog will just jump out if we cook the water any quick and even 1 hour is very quick. But it will be a completely different story if for example: He is inside a water source in the middle of a huge desert. Now the water source is slowly becoming hotter week after week, but the frog may suddenly die if he will leave it. So he rather chose to stay, even if the dead can still be possible... at some point.

Usually, humans or frogs are not leaving because "lack of a better choice", so all you need to do is to make sure "there is no better choice"; This is the term the topic creator had in mind.

As for Steam: Lets say someday every second game got Denuvo attached... and you start to feel "very cooked"... very slowly... not any fast. Yet you have all your games (your water source) on this platform... then even if you feel "slowly cooked" you will not leave and perhaps... even if you meet the worst conditions ever, stay at this source until the very end.

On GoG, however, it is less critical as you can move your games toward your PC... and it may stay there almost forever. However, you may not get "fresh" water anymore, as soon as GoG is on its last water drop. So... it is a good idea keeping it alive, so the "old water" may not start to become murky.

Indeed, competition is important, as it is giving you a possibilty to "move away" as a customer, so it is preserving some freedom to some extend. There should be at least 2-3 comparable alternatives... else you may be critically bound to a certain source.
