Themken: Seeing as how "We’ve also begun working to improve our cheat-detection and hack-prevention capabilities." I suspect it will soon be always online DRM.

I only have the first game, that is more than enough for me as there are other games that scratch that same spot.

"The biggest boon of this seems to be for Mac players, as the announcement on the Battle.net forum says that, “you can finally retire those old Mac PowerPCs. Included with the update is a shiny new installer for OSX.” This fixes a problem where Diablo II would no longer work on any version of MacOSX after 10.7 Lion, which much like the last game update was released in 2011."

That's crazy. That means that they went back and rewrote all of the old OS X PPC code (dating back to when PPC G4s and G3s were in Macs) for OS X x86, which...which is practically unheard of nowadays. The last company that I remember ever doing such a thing was Aspyr many years ago during the x86 transition -- and only because the sole guy responsible for the PPC Mac port did the Universal Binary patch in his spare time. Wow. Just wow.

And to think they're likely doing that for the original StarCraft too...

Yeah, say about Blizzard and their business decisions in recent years what you will, but this is pretty cool.

Of course, I can't help but wonder if this is really an "official" thing, or if it's just some Blizzard employees doing this in their spare time ( without being paid for it ) because they still love the game.

The weird thing is, the console version had local co-op and full offline gameplay right from the start, along with other improvements which made it perfectly enjoyable right from the start, unlike the mess the original PC release was for many months after release.

So much for "Diablo was always an online multiplayer game experience. There's no need for offline single-player.".

Not as much as DRM as SecuROM, but of course it still sucks.

And that's only Diablo 3, You can still play the Campaign of Starcraft 2 offline.


I was hoping you elaborate on the gameplay side, not the DRM side.
