So I was recalling ZP's 2015 top list, and he introduced a category of the games that were the most by the numbers, the least risky, the least memorable, the kind that you can guess the entire plot by looking at the title and developer. These are the games that are equal to A dialtone, just waiting for something to occur.

I think probably the biggest example of this is DOGS_WATCH, an alleged Cyberpunk open world game set in the distant year of 2013 that utterly fails to be either cyber or punk, while having a vividly unrememberable story. Though the course of the entire game, nothing of use seems to get accomplished, and even when you take out one of the main villains, it has all the impact of taking a handful of feathers and throwing them in your face.

So, what's the blandest game that you've played?

As for me, I think the blandiest bland I've played was Actraiser 2 on the SNES. NOT part of the Quintet Resurrection Saga, a simulation/action game removes any semblance of RPG elements and the entire simulation aspect for a slow, difficult, and unwieldy action platformer. Exciting music was replaced by unnoteworthy droning music that often blended into the background, and people and things you cared about replaced by generic Mode 7 set pieces. Hard to care for people when you can't even see them.

I'm going to get beaten senseless for this, but the original Wolfenstein 3D.

That was such a shame, the original Actraiser was such an awesome and original game and the sequel was a boring suck fest without any of the things that made its predecessor great..

As for bland games... I'm not sure, there's not many I can think of off the top of my head..

Non-word.
Not even a good non-word like MAHOOFITANGLYBIZMNESS!

Try unremarkable or unmemorable instead!

or NON-MAHOOFITANGLYBIZMNESS! - cause we all know thats the shit!

Ever dialled the HMRC helpline?!

Oh, that's easy. Dragon Age 2. I did manage to finish it, just to see if I could force myself to do it. I regret that challenge. Some things are better left alone.

Even when it was new I thought it was bland. The entire game looks virtually identical from beginning to end. At least the original Doom had windows and steps. :P

I like making compound words, sorry.

Dragon Age 2, the same series as Dragon Age Inquisition? What was so bland about it?

I'm going to get grief for this, but by far KotOR 2.

Example: Go to club full of exactly the same character over and over again with the same dialogue and everything. Get a quest to find the only one of the fuckers that's actually just that little bit different. Talk to all of them. ALL. OF. THEM. Every last one of those boring, exactly the same-ass characters. None are any different. Look it up online to find out that yeah, that's right. They are actually all the same and you can't actually complete that quest because of it.

Obsidian have made some outstanding games, but that one was a fucking travesty. And no, all the time in the world wouldn't have made it any better. The only mistake Lucasarts made was releasing it at all. Shit writing. Shit, lore-breaking plot and some of the blandest most imbalanced quests imaginable.

The same series, yes. And I loved the first one, haven't played the third one.
Also, would rather not relive the agony of boredom that was DA2 by reciting its faults, there are plenty of reviews out there that seriously diss the game, and for good reason.
Neverwinter Nights takes the crown, I think.

This sounds like a surprisingly accurate description of my Shadowrun Returns playthrough. I really liked the settings, but storytelling was... meh. Especially when I realized it was extremely linear, almost every dialogue options led to the same outcome, party members are useless outside of combat, etc.

Unfortunately, yes. Not sure I'd call it a game though.. I suppose you press more buttons than in some modern AAA games.. could call it a series if QTEs..
