I just found out about this.

It appears to be some kind of point-and-click with fully integrated movie animations for characters. Has anyone played it? I'm kinda shocked this isn't on GOG.

I have. It's a good game with great atmosphere, it's just a shame that the "branching stories" approach doesn't quite work if you're a completionist. It relies on you missing clues to send you on certain paths, so if you discover all or most of the clues it feels like the writer didn't know where he wanted to take the story.

And the combat sucks.

Either a bullshit excuse, or a complete lack of understanding of what is actually going on. Blade Runner works fine as-is on all modern OS's up to and including Win 10.

I have and it's my personal favorite video game of all time! The mechanics might not be perfect but the game really hits the ball out of the park with its overpowering atmosphere, which to me no other game has even come close to matching.

Here's an old thread I made about it, however the linked article doesn't exist at that url anymore. Instead it's now here:

Well, the article behind you link states the original game won't even install on 64bit Windows. so you need a third-party installer which also fixes some other issues in the game. I wouldn't call that "as-is".

But yeah, a re-release should be possible, at least with no technical issues. The guy is talking about a "remake", that's not really needed (as in improved graphics and such). Probably there are legal issues though with the Blade Runner license and whatnot.

I have the original retail version on CDs. Never played it yet though but good to know there is a way to play it on modern PCs. Bookmarked that page (maybe I've done it before, I recall there being similar discussion about this game before on GOG.com).

so did sega
they allegedly lost the source code to panzer dragoon saga
Great game, complex, engrossing, with superb mood and everything, but I never finished it. I remember I got really frustrated at some point. I think Ireally didn't like how I seemed to fall down one of the branching paths, I wanted to do something different, but couldn't make it for some reason, and I sorto f gave up on the whole enterprise. I would like to give it another shot but

Does that mean getting a used copy from eBay/pirating the game are the only ways to get it now and forever? That would suck. I really hoped to see it on GOG one day.

Yes, I have it and in great "good as new" condition too.

It's a great game, one of the greatest point and click adventures ever made.
It's also a perfect example of how you can create an excellent game based on a movie, even if you don't have the same actors, same soundtrack or same plot as the movie did. Sadly not too many other games have even tried to do anything like that.

As for the game being on GOG, that is challenging to say the least. I might say impossible, but somehow they managed to release Star Trek adventures, so there's some hope for Blade Runner as well.

Actually branching stories works quite well, I think, which adventure games have made it as good or even better than Blade Runner? It should also be remembered that Blade Runner was sort of a front runner in branching stories adventure games, maybe their approach wasn't perfect, but they were trying to create something that really hadn't been done before, and not really since either.

BR wasn't a shooter, so of course the combat features can't be compared with games that mostly rely on them. What BR did was give a player a choice. In some cases you could choose to shoot a person, or take a different approach, which again created an additional layer of interactivity and sense of reality in the game world. Again it wasn't perfectly made, but there aren't many games which have tried to implement a feature like this.

It can easily happen even these days, not to mention back in the 90's when there were few industry standards for managing projects, there was no cloud, no version control (or at least very basic stuff) and HDDs were too small to even fully install a game like Blade Runner. And it's one thing keeping backups of the main project, keeping all the source files of all assets (necessary for an HD remake without creating everything from scratch) is an entirely different matter altogether.

bladerunner is from 1997
8 and 10 gig hd's were already a thing back then
they were ridicilously expensive but they were around
and in 2001 20 gig was already the norm
Also remember that the source of System Shock 2 was lost, which is why there can't be a true Linux port and they bundle it through Wine.
It's rather disappointing really, game companies losing such stuff. Several of the games with lost code are treasures.
I remember being completely blown away by the option for a full installation of something like 1.2GB. That was more than twice the size of my hard drive back then. Sheesh come to think of it, I still had my 486 when I played it. Must've been right before my pentium 200 upgrade. The ingame camera pannings, like when you take off or land, used to be incredibly jerky.
