Playing the table-top DnD games is probably what got me interested in gaming (though I didn't think it at the time) and likely what hooked me on the RPG genre. Reading fantasy books back then further influenced my interest gaming, surprisingly marvel comics if you can believe it. But I suppose even before those, there was Atari 2600 and Commodore 64. But my memories are a bit fuzzy on those last two. The big boss battles no one can win against, age and time.
But my first real taste of gaming came of course was going to the public arcades. I mean those things were a huge deal back in the 80s. The amount of quarters that disappeared into those tiny little slots was unthinkable. So much fun and so much frustration. And who can forget all the times the quarters that got stuck and you had to call the attendant. Of course, once in a while they tinkered a bit on the inside to give you a few extra credits ::wink wink::
Pac-man, Galaga, Gauntlet, Dig Dug, Dragon's Lair (don't get me started on this one), Golden Axe, a few racing games that you got to sit in or ride on (motorcycle types) ... OMG, there were so many I'm drawing a blank trying to recall any more. But let's just say a lot of my afterschool hours were spent in those places. Main feature of some of those places were go-cart racing of miniature golf, which were a ton of fun too of course. They were so addictive and so intoxicating.
When home consoles came out eventually and the arcade time diminished. But they will always hold a special place in my heart. I'll be honest, before this contest, I actually forgot about them. I guess time really moves on. So, I do owe a thanks to GOG for taking me down memory lane, even if only for a brief moment.
For some reason the movie Goonies popped into my head as I'm trying to type this all out. But I'm going to stop here though. Those were nostalgic times, but thinking about them now while joyful, also causes a bit of melancholy. Maybe I'll add a bit more if I can. The 80s were a special time for me and too many strong memories lay in that era and not just when it comes to gaming.
