Netflix, 2K and Take-Two Interactive are partnering to produce a film adaptation of the renowned video game franchise BioShock.

No directors or writers have been attached to the project as part of this initial announcement. There have been rumors that Guillermo Del Toro or The Duffer Brothers (who all work with Netflix under overall deals) would be helming the project but right now, that’s purely speculation.

For Netflix, Vertigo Entertainment has worked on Death Note and Extinction with upcoming projects being The Mother starring Jennifer Lopez due out in 2022, The Witch Boy and Reborn which is a co-production with Fortis Films.

Excited about this. Bioshock 1 and 2 would make for a fantastic ride, story- and visuals-wise. Hope they don't rush it.
Oh shit, this will be bad and even more if it's a live action.
Pretty sure this was announced about two weeks ago.
This is the coolest news since the news of the new season of The Witcher coming out. For a film to be successful it has to be close to the game, which means it can be given an R rating. Since the main feature of the game was water, I think there will be a lot of fluid simulation like in Aquaman. I'm looking forward to the film's release.

Neither the Netflix Film or Netflix Geeked accounts tweeted about it before today. The main Netflix account still hasn't tweeted about it, though they did retweet the Geeked account.

Maybe it's just warming up the audience for a future film, I don't think Netflix would risk such a lucrative offer to distribute such a lucrative project. If Bioshock gets filmed right it will raise a huge amount of money or get buried. By the way, who do you think will be appointed as a director? I wish it was James Wan. He'll be able to convey that very atmosphere.

Paul Feig it is, then!

Maybe, but the script has to be written by Eric Kripke. All seasons of Supernatural and The Boys have been successful with his involvement. What do you think?
Picking a director is tricky though, the first game was a proper horror game to me, the second was more experimental-action oriented in narrative and gameplay, and the third was more of a classic action-adventure.

If they are going for horror, I also think James Wan would be a very cool option indeed. I think he could capture both the creepyness and the stylistic aspects.
Yeah I think Bioshock could work as a tv show.

The setting is "realistic" in that it is based on people with minimal fantasy (apart from the powers I guess but that can be done decently well). It is also kind of zombie-esque with the mutated inhabitants so non-fans can get into it.

The big issue is the twist imo. The twist is impactful because as a game, you are controlling your character and in a sense "chose" to follow the missions given to you, later realizing that you really didnt have a choice or free will. Since you control the character, you also feel as helpless as the character when the reveal is shown.

As a passive viewer, this twist wont have the same impact.

Totally agree, but I'm afraid the plot may suffer because of the Sister's problem. Many critics may disapprove of the child abuse in the film, though what is there to say about such cruelty. Remember the movie Curse of Anabelle: The beginnings of evil. Extremely cruel. But everyone was watching. I'd probably take Tom Holand as Jack. A young, talented, actor who "Can" As for me then it is necessary to implement the first part of the game and endure the very same scary atmosphere.

I think, in case of BioShock, the postion of screenwriter is far more important.

Then when picking actors, I would give them homework. Play Bioshock to explore that very environment and experience those very emotions. There may not be many actors in the film, the main thing is to have the atmosphere and the tension of the situation. After all, that's why we love BioShock so much. If they turn it into a western I'm afraid they might lose some of the fan audience. Yes, and with making movies like this you should be wary not so many critics as fans who fanatically explored the world of BioShock up and down and felt the atmosphere.

I both agree and disagree. After all, if the screenwriter writes the script, it's up to the director to implement it. So many of the scenarios look impressive, but the implementation leaves a lot to be desired. Think of the Dark Tower series written by Stephen King. The books are great, but why try to fit them all into one feature film. I mean, the show's asking for it. Take it and shoot it by the book. The director decided to fit everything into one film, but he didn't calculate the time frame.

Sorry, I got carried away.

The script for the film was written by Akiva Goldsman, Jeff Pinkner, Anders Thomas Jensen, and Nikolaj Arcel. Which is kinda my point - they completely changed the story and tried to fit everything in one movie (they could easily make it cover only Gunslinger and/or Drawing of the Three).

Same with BioShock. The story of Rapture and Jack Ryan makes quite specific political commentary. If the political views of screenwriters are different from Levin's they will turn it on its head.
