Hi, is it worth buying Bioshock 1-2 Remasters if you have the originals? A friend of mine has them here and they do nothing but crash every 15-20 minutes and take ages to start. They don't look much better either.

The Remastered versions are notoriously more buggy / less stable than the Originals and reviews were way down at Mixed / Negative on Steam even before they came to GOG. Some people say crashes can be reduced by starting the game with -dx9 command line switch, but that seems to depend on individual hardware. The games seem to crash at certain scenes / actions (eg, opening the map) which is definitely game-related. You're also not missing much with the "Remastered" textures:-

^ Aside from the walls, etc, looking better on the classic, they actually forgot to redraw in Andrew Ryan's moustache! Alternatively, play the Classic versions. I've never had a single crash on the originals with the only tweaking needed to run is setting compatibility settings to "Win XP SP3". For some reason, the GOG versions of B1-2 are indeed the slowest of all at starting up (both Classics & Remastered). I've no idea why that is but several people have guessed it's due to Galaxy integration. My favourite build for B1 is still the Humble Store's Classic version (starts instantly, rock solid stable and no Steam / Galaxy dll's) but that's only for B1, and if you want DRM-Free then B2 is only available from GOG. It's just a shame that 2K didn't treat the Remasters better from the start.

Tip : There are game-specific forums here that will usually get you more answers to game-specific questions (if you search for game at bottom of main forum page, you'll see sub-forum like this). And welcome to GOG. :-)
I've recently started playing Bioshock 1 Remastered on Steam and haven't encountered any major issues so far, but maybe I'm just lucky. However, it's probably not worth buying them if you have the originals, as the improvements are marginal and in some places they may even look worse.

Hey, thanks! Yeah, that's what I was referring to. I think I'll play the classics then (I've never had any crashes with them either). And LOL at moustache-less Ryan in the Remaster shot, I never noticed that. I was nervous about buying precisely because I saw the review scores (Steam's B2 was down to "Mostly Negative" at one point, and there can't be that many people that are all wrong)

Yeah I noticed quite a bit of variability in the screenshots (some better, some worse). Thanks for your input!

I have Bioshock Remaster on Steam and didn't experience a single crash in 5 hours playtime. It runs really great too without lag.

On the opposite end, I had the original BioShock crash on me once about part of the way into the medical pavilion. Nothing save corrupting, but still quite nasty.

Hmm and I couldn't even play original Bioshock 1 because of no audio and crashing but I didn't had any problems running the remastered version.
The only real oddity I ran into in Bioshock 1 Remastered when object and corpses would at times quite inexplicably perform a very slow drift into a set direction. I wonder what's messing with the physics there.
Sadly for me the game is almost unplayable, crashing W10 very often and forcing me to reboot my pc every time. I am talking of Bioshock 1 Remastered on GOG. The classic version is included but I have yet to try it more extensively. I must add that there doesn't seem to be a huge difference between the 2 versions and some people straightforwardly aesthetically prefer the original. Also, the classic is of course lighter to run.
Both the Classic and the Remastered versions were different shades of awful:

Classic: Has a sound bug where only a limited number of sounds are allowed to play simultaneously. As soon as an alarm goes off and you have more than one NPC on screen, the sounds they make will gobble each other up. IIRC this can be fixed (or at least improved) by hacking some ini file, but it's still amazing a bug like this is still in the game 12 years later.

Remastered: Worked like a charm. Sound plays properly. This changed very apruptly once I got the camera. Whenever I try to take a picture, the game instacrashes. Terrific work!
BS1 Remastered worked like a charm for me, no crashes or other issues. BS2 Remaster on the other hand crashed pretty often, mostly in the middle of fights with lots of turrets and/or bots around (ie. when gathering). Some fights I had to do 3 or 4 times before it went through without crashing - really annoying.

Win7 x64.
The only problem I ran into in the remastered version is some Missing or inaudible dialog!
