Most interesting thing today for me was nVidia claiming that by Microsoft's metrics even the 2000 series are well ahead of the Xbox Series X teraflop count. By like double or even triple, even. That along with a downclocked Ryzen 3700ish makes me a lot less afraid of console performance shooting past PC performance for a while.

Anyway, I'm not upgrading this year, my 2070 should play Cyberpunk fine. Maybe next year.

I have a feeling those were "RTX ON" numbers they were comparing. Not that ray tracing isn't nice and all, but it doesn't and can never replace gameplay, it just adds to the realism with a certain "wow" effect. I'd much rather like to see more efficient shader-based ray tracing rather than RTX core / ASIC magic, and essentially a boost in the general performance of a graphics card. Nvidia has taken more of a sidestep to that ever since Pascal.

You could even hear Jensen insinuate the same thing when he said: "To my Pascal friends, it is now safe to upgrade". I think not, my friend, I think not.

In terms of pricing though, it seems they are willing to cut their margins in the gaming sector in order to secure an even wider market share - probably because of the profits they've recently reaped in the server/AI segment.

I honestly didn't expect the performance per dollar to be this good. I feel sorry for anyone who has bought an RTX 2000 series card recently since their values have just dropped significantly.

I also wonder if Nvidia priced their cards so aggressively because they know what AMD has planned?

if your buying a card with rtx in mind you are probably better of with the 3000 series,

i heard that both the 2060super ( that one is in my possession ) and the 2070super struggle in most rtx titles even on 1080p.

Control for example is impossible on 1080p for all rtx settings enabled and still reach 60 fps stable ( not to mention the plain lack of computing power ) the 2080super should be good to go without working on its limit full time, if that is your choice of course, super ultra settings combined with decent frames per sec
that is computer life right? my 2060 super cost me 550 and that specific model is still that expensive, but still even managed to track one for just above 300 euro's which is indeed a bit painful

So will rtx be viable with these new cards?
It just looks like a scam feature, and it is still faked mostly.

Imho just buy a new card if your wallet allows it. No reason to wait for future cards, you just miss out on the fun of using one while you wait.

Did you see Nvidias video? 50--250% as fast with ray tracing on. Viable? Depends on your resolution and graphics card and desired settings and frame rate but much more viable than hereto, I dare say.

So, anyone have a suggestion for a replacement for the R7 240? Preferably single slot and able to be crammed into an Optiplex 9010 mini-tower?

Nothing really, at the moment, that would be more than a small step forward.

Mmm, I will take a 3090 (is there a ti version?). Don’t need the 8k, but ultra wide hd with my 120fps gsync should be ok to run most forseeable things.

Seen some vids yeah, most only use a very limited ray tracing.
Viable is FHD 60fps+ and not only add reflection to some puddles.

It is never safe to upgrade, some will say for rtx 2xxx series to look at RX 5700XT and similar. But I'm not into this so don't take me for granted, I suck at GPU choice.

What I'm curious about is DLSS 2.0, and if almost for the same price range you can buy better gpu, hm, why not.
But of course, still too early to talk about anything, I will for sure wait for some time, waiting AMD, and waiting reviews plus multiple choices of GPUs from asus, gigabyte etc
I will need new PC in the next year so I guess everything will happen at the right time, no surprises before I buy PC, that would suck, but it hapens, so I'm glad this GPU thing is happening now, at least something. :)

AMD are not in any real trouble. Their cards have not been reaching the very peak of enthusiast performance for a good few generations, but they're still making profits from it. They sell well enough on the budget and mid range scale, where most people are buying. Will Big Navi reach the RTX 3000 heights? Probably not, but I don't think AMD really care. RTX is a nice little gimmick that nobody uses, now maybe their cards will be good enough for it be be adopted more. That's cool, and where these huge performance boosts are being marketed. Will the real world performance be like that? Probably not.

Nvidia went all out on these cards. Companies only really do that when they feel something is breathing down their neck.

Also, don't expect to be paying $500 on a 3070. Expect a stock drought and huge markups on those products.

Were not the upcoming game consoles advertised as having hardware supported ray-tracing? That would mean that AMD's next generation will have it, RT cores or whatever they will call it.

well belief it or not but DLSS and full ray tracing does make for some beautiful imagery in control. even tho it lacks a bit of sharpness. i do prefer the DLSS and full ray tracing ( which still uses the gpu bigtime ) over standard dx11, you even have another setting for global illumination with dx12 cards which disables ray tracing but adds more light calculations that work very well too

in mechwarrior V its really a non existent function that does not add a lot, and those are all the titles i have in my possession atm

i would certainly grab another ray tracing title if its done with the same quality as control is ( and something i'm interested in of course )
