Dragon Age Ultimate Edition is a great Turn-Based Fantasy WRPG .. Still surprised that nobody hasn't mentioned it yet :D

I'm always going to wheel out The Avernum Series on a small tablecart whenever someone asks for a turn based RPG of any kind.

One thing I really dislike in RPGs is enemy level scaling. I don't know how it was done in the Wizardry games, but it was one factor that pretty much ruined Oblivion for me. I don't level up my character just so I can still be challenged by the same enemies I was facing at level 1-2. I find that really destroys immersion.

Otherwise, some good suggestions here. Solasta and Atom RPG look pretty good and several people have mentioned Betrayal at Krondor, which I haven't played. Of course, Baldur's Gate 3 looks set to be very good as well, once it is finished.

Wizardry 8 is actually the only Wizardry game to do enemy level scaling, and even then, there's a limit to how strong the enemies in a given area can be.

Also, the scaling is done by having you fight different enemies, though they may still look like the enemies you were fighting earlier.

Really want to play Wizardry 8, but it never goes on sale :/

On the other subject, Wasteland 3, Divinity OS Enhanced Edition and Pathfinder Kingmaker are great games. Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous is even greater so far, but it never ends, I will recommend it once I complete it.

Despite its poor reception, I think that Torment: Tides of Numenera is a great RPG.
But keep in mind that there are very few combat encounters in the whole game.

Wasteland 2 is another one, with much more combat encounters, using a really nice tactical system for fights.

It's a really good game. But it's more like a 'Real time combat with pause', isn't?

Didn't occur to me to count it as an RPG, though I guess it makes as much if not more sense than my HoMM 4 suggestion. Though if we are counting it, my favorite of the series is probably Armored Princess.

With the exception of Shadowrun and maybe Battle Chasers, that's an... odd list for RPGs. Wouldn't consider most of them to fit that category. I mean, they have RPG elements, but doesn't strike me as the primary genre.

Wait, you're saying that Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark isn't an RPG? To me, it is clearly an RPG, albeit a JRPG (and therefore not suitable for this topic), and an SRPG. (It would not make sense to classify that game differently from Final Fantasy Tactics, which is a very similar game.)

It's the age old unresolved question of what an RPG is. I use it in the wide sense it is often used. For example, according to GOG, most of these are listed as RPGs. The ones that are not (KB:C, EL2 and FW) are listed as strategy, which is IMHO pretty silly, as they are pure tactics games.

I definitely don't require RPGs to have any role-playing in them, and the better ones (for me) usually indeed do not have any.

That said, I now realise --- thanks to dtgreene's comment --- that Fell Seal and Fae Tactics probably do not belong on the list, as they are essentially JRPGs, even if not originating in Japan.

Isn't Battle Chasers JRPG-ish too? At least from the battle screenshots, don't know it otherwise.

You're probably right. The demarcation line between JRPGs and WRPGs is fairly fuzzy and --- except for the purpose of this thread --- not really important for me, as I like (and dislike) quite a few games in both categories.

I also realised I didn't state what constitutes an RPG for me. It's mostly:
- individual player character(s) with some personality
- tactical combat
- player-controlled skill progression
- story-driven
