If you are not easily offended there are some pretty good recent sitcoms like:
- Silicon Valley
- Bad Education
- Plebs
- Archer

Married with Children is the classic example of the non-PC genre.
You may also like some other classics:
- Absolutely Fabulous
- Black Adder
- Fawlty Towers

Brooklyn 99 is harmless fun. I am not sure whether The Last Man on Earth is really a comedy, but it's often entertaining.

Fantasysci5: I never understood the love Seinfeld gets. But then again, I only watched a bit when I was a teenager, so I might not have been at the right age for it. Maybe I should try again?
The first few seasons were an okay sitcom, everyone had their little story in each of the episodes, it became truly great was when they started merging those storylines. One character does something small in the beginning that ends up having major unintended consequences for another at the end of the episode.

I think this started in the episode "The Marine Biologist", you should watch that one, if it doesn't interest you then Seinfeld just isn't for you.

.... Was Mash considered a sitcom? (If so, I loved that too).
Definitely definitely definitely give Seinfeld another whirl. I'd suggest starting at the beginning and going straight through, but you don't NEED to. It's smart, socially-aware (not like, social issues, but with insight into every day people's lives and how things function and the problems with them and it, done in a light and humorous yet critiquing way that is genius, imo), and has been said, stands the test of time. I have an excellent memory, and know almost all of the gestures and lines of Seinfeld from memory, but STILL find it enjoyable/rewarding to watch every so often (like every few years I get the itch and watch them, though nothing consistent.)

MASH wasn't a sitcom, but I also sometimes think about it in regards to a conversation like this because it has many sitcom qualities. It's one of my favorite shows of all time as well.

djdarko: I generally can't stand sitcoms, I don't think many of them endure the test of time, with the exception of Seinfeld. I find myself quoting jokes from that sometimes on a daily basis.
I generally can't either, and have been surprised to find that I even like the handful that I do. Nothing comes close to Seinfeld though.

I very very often am seeing stuff in every day life that reminds me of something from Seinfeld, just the slightest oddest things at times, but there are soooo many, and now my partner knows them all mostly well enough to see the exact same things I do in relation, it's truly a testament to how great it is.

I think it's so great that it actually isn't just hands-down the best sitcom ever, but it also sits right up there among the top handful of best TV shows ever, which to me, for a sitcom to even be thought of in that regard is ridiculous, but Seinfeld makes it undeniable.

adaliabooks: Seriously, six pages and no one has even mentioned That 70s Show?
It has some pretty good parts, surprisingly, but nothing that reaches "great" or "best" status, imo. Even if there are some great episodes (though I'm not sure that I'd think there are), for something to be "great" overall I think the greatness needs to be consistent, and 70's is only semi-consistent with their "pretty good" episodes. I was actually surprised how much I was okay with the show though, I had never given it a chance until a couple years ago because it looked despicable from what I could tell, but, only parts of it were.

I like the earlier episodes a lot, and think they are better than just "good", but I would say there are more genius/great great episodes once you start getting into season 3 and 4 than in 1+2, but, even so, 1+2 have many many gems among them.

I'd say a good one to go for is one with a heavy Frank Costanza presence. He's one of the biggest treats of the series XD

Earlier somebody wrote roughly "Seinfeld is the BEST." Without even thinking about it, I read that in my head with the voice of that chap who eventually got a 'dinner' with Jerry at Mendy's (?). "This soup is the best, Jerry, the BEST." :D :D

Such a brilliant show, and as mentioned, there are so many everyday situation that they manage to make hilarious situations out of. Now I feel a sudden urge to re-watch it ;)

Others I like are Fawlty Towers, Black Adder and Monty Python. Okay, none of those are sitcoms I suppose, at least not the latter, but they are great comedy shows. The English have a knack for making great comedy. The Yankees tend to streamline it too much, and pretty quickly suck all the comedy out of a show, if there was anything to begin with. The first few seasons of "How I met your mother" and "Big bang theory" wasn't terrible, some of it I really liked, but pretty soon it was unwatchable, I couldn't even hate watch it.

Frasier was pretty good though, for the most part, and Cheers.

Well I don't usually watch sitcoms, but I do really enjoy watching Modern Family, which is also a mockumentary. Is fun as hell, the characters are well defined and so far they've been doing well.

Loving Sofia Vergara, colombiana bella!
Master of None on Netflix is just shockingly funny at places... non-pc warning.
In the first episode getting a morning after pill and then declaring it was "my treat" is just priceless!

Potzato: Worst : I have to agree with TBBT, but that's not completely black. I actually really enjoyed the earlier seasons ( but clearly not all characters, and definitely not the archetypal summary it makes of geek culture).

timppu: I think the TV show is not aimed at geeks but to "common people" in order to laugh at geeks and the geek culture. The subject matter needs to be presented in a very simplified form so that anyone can get it (and laugh at it). Like constant references to Star Wars and such, as everyone knows Star Wars...

It is similar as with Frasier, where the point was for common people to laugh at the manners etc. of cultural "upper class" people. Like how their hobbies include wine-tasting, going to manicure etc...

I guess I mention this as I remember one friend of mine, which considers himself as a geek I guess, was looking forward to the series, apparently thinking it is a sitcom aimed at geeks. Not so, it is still aimed at common people, to laugh at archetypal geeks.
I can agree to that, but I initially found the series interesting out of self loathing, because I relate to the fact that I often try to provided the base of a scientific explanation when I am asked questions.
And I dropped the show when it started focusing on love conundrums, because, it is known that love is mainly chemistry and chemistry is secondary to physics.

adaliabooks: This is actually my favourite thing in a sitcom.. when they let the camera linger a little longer at the end of a scene and you see the characters actually laughing or trying not to laugh.
Not a sitcom, but the brilliant Carol Burnett Show had this occur on a fairly regular basis. Tim Conway and Harvey Korman were the two that most often ended up not being able to keep a straight face when the other was on a roll during a skit.

Okay, I'll give Seinfeld another whirl now that I'm older, since so many people in this thread and my my own family say it's good! MASH was the first tv show I ever loved, and I am very fond of it. I'm one of the only people out there who loves Frank Burns dearly.
The worst to me is Friends. Annoying characters.

I watched Big Bang Theory for some episodes in the earlier seasons, but then it got ridiculously cringeworthy with all the romance storylines. As if I really wanna know about what's his name's sex life... what in the fuck? Now it's a cringey show that's unbearable to watch.

Agreed, the only thing better than George Costanza were his parents.

The show became really shitty towards the end, the final season sucked hard.
