Whilst we're on this, anyone recommend any movies about earlier periods? Most movies appear to be during the Tokugawa reign after the warring states period. I saw that movie about the men who tread on the tigers tail which I would only watch once. Anything on Benkei the Sohei or that Minamoto guy?

Somewhat graphic scene of seppuku. It's meant to be upsetting. I hope that doesn't put you off from the movie. It might be my favorite of all time.

Something a little different is The Hunted. Modern day ninjas vs a samurai trying to protect some guy who witnessed a murder. Swordplay isn't bad.

russellskanne: 1. Harakiri
2. Sword of Doom
About Harakiri, there are two. The original and the remake.

De4thstroke: You know, there was once a black man from Africa who became a Samurai?

Actually - I didn't know that. Fascinating.

But did you know about the female Samurai?

As I always say: no matter how long one lives - one learns something new every day. :)

There is the original and there is the modern remake. The first one was excellent. The modern is good as well.

Did anybody mention Kagemusha, by Kurosawa Akira. Historical and one of the very best ever. Eventually he might go and make Ran, Kurosawa pace (the value of silence) combined with a explosion of color and powerful images. Inspired on The King Lear. Both movies are excellent.

Rashomon, which earned Kurosawa recognition in the West, based on the short story "In the forest".

Throne of Blood. Based on Macbeth.

Any period story by Kurosawa, really.
