My cats are combination samurai/ninja cats. Every dawn they ride out to stealthily do battle with the evil vacuum cleaner shogun who causes terror in the living room!
Six-String Samurai
Sansho Dayu (Sansho the Bailiff, 1954)

A forgotten masterpiece in drama, slow paced but never boring. If you're a pure action fan, look elsewhere. No matter how cynical you are, if you have even an ounce of humanity in you, this movie is hard to watch and you'll probably think twice before you ever post in the "bitch about life in general" thread again. Two hours of your life well spent, guaranteed.
1. Harakiri
2. Sword of Doom

lanipcga: The only one I've seen was "After the Rain" (雨あがる), for which Akira Kurosawa worked on the screenplay. I don't watch very many samurai movies at all, but I really, really enjoyed this one. I highly recommend it.
Oh wow, thanks for posting this. I'm a fan of samurai films and yet never heard of this. It was indeed a joy to watch.
Not a film, but go read Usagi Jojimbo
The ones from Akira Kurosawa. All of them. "Modern" samurai movie stuff is generally full of shit, videogame-like.
It's got to be the 2010 movie 13 Assassins, up there with one of my favourite martial art movies of all time!

De4thstroke: I only know one Samurai movie. Seven Samurai.
It's not a movie but the anime series was pretty good as well:

The last one I saw was Joi-uchi by Masaki Kobayashi. Toshiro Mifune plays in the movie. I recommend it.

So can anyone here add to list?
Yoji Yamada's samurai Trilogy: Twilight Samurai (2002) The Hidden Blade (2004) Love and Honor (2006).

And if you like to read manga, I recommend Takemitsu Zamurai written by Issei Eifuku and illustrated by Taiyō Matsumoto (maybe one of the greatest mangaka currently active).
