Damuna: So, how does Microsoft's default defragger compare with other tools?
It does the job alright. Dunno about speed, but I've been using it ever since I installed Windows 7. Don't really have a reason to use something else.

Sorry to hijack the thread but how often should you run the defrag if using a third party one? I typically do once a month with the Vista one.

Well if you defrag a drive too much it reduces the life span.

So I tend to only scan it once every few months, if it looks bad I WILL defrag it.

So far though, Win7 has been doing an amazing job of keeping the HDD clean....

I use JKDefrag on my XP box. Works well for me. I generally only bother with it if the system seems sluggish.

On my Win7 box, I don't use one, since I'm using an SSD. :p

I also recommend Defraggler. It uses similar methods to Windows but seems to get the job done much faster. Also, it has a really essential feature which I don't think any other defrag programs have: folder defragging. Really handy after installing games (for optimal game performance).

This is kind of relative. Its faster than XP's defragmenter, but its slower than Vista's defragmenter (at least on the XP and two Vista systems that I have it installed). Haven't tested it on 7.

I can only compare in 7, but yeah, it's much faster.

You're still using JKDefrag? You should update to MyDefrag, from the same place, but rewritten and renamed.

I did some research (aka google forums and articles) on this a couple of years ago and the concolusion I reached:

built in Windows defragger is best in terms of optimizations and pretty much everything else except speed if I remember.

Why? MS knows their file system better than anyone else.

And hey, it's already installed :)

This mentality is greatly frustrating. Why play newer games, install patches, upgrade your operating system or hardware...

Indeed. If it ain't broke, that doesn't mean it can't be made better. That's be a very black-and-white view: things being either broken or perfect.
