To those wondering about GoG's current policy. Here is a letter sent last year to to the Red Eclipse team and explains why there hasn't been any more free games and projects added since the initial list containing Warsow.

A lot of good mentions so far I completely forgot about last night, I didn't see the previous thread which has a great list on the first post. There are so many threads on General Discussion Things get totally buried very quickly. There needs to be a sticky. I was originally intending on drawing the line at ongoing open source projects where the assets are totally free. But I may have to rethink that to include non open source as well as you all have put up quite a few great titles that probably deserve to be mentioned. Games like Dwarf Fortress (orbiter isn't FOSS anyway) But I didn't include OpenRA (AFIK you need game data files which are not free.)

@Rampancy Fanmade Marathon Games are already on SBO (got to simplify the list somehow or people would be looking all day)

{EDIT} I forgot westwood released the game game assets for the original C+C and it's affiliates, So yeah that's definitely going on the list.

1) That is more or less the standard rejection letter, though instead of the usual "too niche" line, it uses the "free indie" line.
2) GOG has released a free game each year, more or less, with a few years (2013, 2012) having more. I believe there will be a free game added either during their birthday or during Christmas this year as well. My additional guess would be that it will be an older game, not a newer one.

GOG never had a policy to release FOSS games. Warsow is the anomaly, not the norm. So GOG never changed their policy on releasing FOSS games.

Well then if it's a matter of point of view, then it is still truthful to say they changed their policy after Warsow. Yes it was in the early early days of GoG when they put it out. And maybe they should rethink that policy.

Warsow came out in 2005 you're thinking when they declared beta was over. My memory is sometimes faulty, but I was pretty sure Warsow was among the early titles when GoG first opened.

I meant released on GOG. The early early days of Warsow didn't matter to GOG, since GOG didn't exist back then.

So again, no policy change on GOG's part with Warsow.

You're going by the "Release Date" on the GoG page. They can change that you know. Especially since Warsow declared a full release in 2012. The only way you know for sure is if you go to Wayback machine.

Also, Frogatto, made by one of the persons that helped in Wesnoth development, is quite good.
The latest version is paid, but you can find older versions for download.
I remember downloading that game for free a few years ago, in the official website.
So it shouldn't be illegal to download a old version. But I'm not a lawyer.

As I said, my memory could be faulty and you could be right in they added it in 2012. But by definition them declaring they do not Release FOSS when there is clear example of them having done so in the past constitutes policy change. So I have no idea what the heck you are arguing.

By "Not release FOSS" I do not mean that they will decline any FOSS software, I mean that they will not go out of their way to release a software just because it's a FOSS. So yeah, the "we do not release FOSS" is not a policy change. That is what I'm arguing, that GOG didn't change their policy about releasing free games.

I'm just saying. Someone at RedEclipse made a request to be added and they rejected it. On grounds that they didn't have when they released Warsow.

GoG not releaseing FOSS titles on grounds they are FOSS is really the point of the thread. I really should rename it though.

I can guarantee you then that Red Eclipse was not rejected for being FOSS. But that is the "nicest" way to reject that game.
There are many reasons GOG may reject a game, that should they become public, it will do more harm than it's worth. So they usually give a reason that is more believable, even if still questionable by people (the "too niche" I mentioned earlier).
