timppu: I loved it when he told the interviewer he finished The Witcher 3 twice:
Reviewer: "PS4 or Xbox?"
Superman: "PC!" (with an "Uh oh..." face)
Reviewer: "Oh wow... Was that because as a child your evil stepfather forced you to use a PC or etc. etc.?"
You left out:

Cavill: "I'm a big PC gamer (..) I played the Witcher 3 through twice."
Reviewer: "PS4 or Xbox?"
Cavill: "PC!"
Reviewer: "Oh wow, you're a PC gamer?!" ;P

Anyway, I'm a PC gamer mostly because I'm also a cheap ass gamer and a sucker for modding and freeware and such. Need the PC anyway and games on it are cheaper, plus it's more open. Console environment seems much more closed and supervised.

So I guess this is how it goes. I start a thread about why I am a PC gamer, and by the end of the thread possibly end up buying a Nintendo console. I didn't foresee this when starting the thread...
Come on, admit it, you secretly wanted a Switch but started the opposing thread to justify your guilt step by step (read: post by post) :)

In case you buy it don't worry about getting a game in physical cartridge, you can also shop digitally for it in the Nintendo Switch online store. Not to mention that Switch is the indie devs' favorite console, so you will be able to find tons of interesting games.

anzial: Still have fond memories of playing Doom from a floppy on a 800x600 monitor attached to Intel 286 based PC lol

Also tons of shovelware. My god! Browsing the eShop can be a downright pain in the butt unless one knows what their looking for.

Yep, Doom uses extenders. So 386 is minimum i think.
But Wolfenstein3d works on 286. Maybe anzial has fond memories of Wolfenstein but mistakes it with Doom, like me about 25 years ago. Naive and foolish young me :)

Sildring: When I built my very first PC from scratch in early 2013, I didn't have enough money for every part, even though I was aiming for a low-end system. I end up buying a Radeon HD 5450, a low consumption GPU only suitable for multimedia system, it was the worst choice one could make but it was $ 25/30 USD which made it the only affordable choice at the time. I've played games in 800*600 like I was stuck in the 90s until I got my first paycheck 9 months later xD
Hey, I have one :D

Got it for a old computer (duct tape overclocked Q6600) and those motherboard chipset graphics were, how can I say it, a bit weaker that a RTX3090... Just a little bit.
Those old chipset graphics were horrendous even back in the day and can't decode modern video codecs (CPU max out streaming video), the 5450 helped a lot watching youtube videos etc. It's kinda fun trying to find games to play there, there is plenty of good games playable on that thing!

timppu:
A couple of friends do play console games even if they have relatively powerfull PC machines. They know how to properly use the computer (way better than me) but the assle-free of just booting the console, pick up two gamepads and have fun, after a long day of work is the big reason why they chose the consoles.

Yes, a PC can work like a console, specially with Steam but the setup sometimes kills the enjoyment.

MIKObscura: Aaah you remind me of the years I spent playing TF2 on a crappy laptop that could barely run it, the not so good ol' days
avatar
timppu: Well actually when my gaming-capable PCs are taken (by my kids), I can play only on PCs that can barely or not at all run even TF2. I tried it on the backup laptop that I usually use then, and it runs very poorly on it even on low settings. I think it is mainly because that laptop has only 3GB of RAM, running TF2 on Linux Mint 20 on it.

So instead if I play on that laptop, I play very old games, like currently replaying Age of Empires 2 on it. My King Kong: The Movie retail game seems to run fine on that laptop though (its Windows XP partition; that game doesn't run on Windows 7 or later due to the copy protection), I must remember to play it at some point.

Anyway, now I am thinking that many PC gamers might buy consoles due to their kids? That would probably make sense in my case.

Panaias: I don't know how old your children are, but I'm certain that the moment you buy a Switch for yourself it will become their favorite toy!
avatar
timppu: 4 and 6 years old.

They play Team Fortress 2 more like it was Minecraft. They usually don't go play online because they get constantly killed there, so instead they e.g. run their own servers or play offline, just running around alone in empty maps, or maybe "playing" against a couple of bots in easy mode.

Damn, it is Xmas so now I am seriously considering checking the Switch prices... It would be perfect timing so that my wife doesn't question why I bought a gaming console. Duh, for the kids for Christmas!

EDIT: It is little over 300€ here at the moment, it seems. I wouldn't be surprised I buy one today at the supermarket, IF they are still available... But then I'd need to buy some game for it too, I don't think that base model comes with any games? Free ones?

So I guess this is how it goes. I start a thread about why I am a PC gamer, and by the end of the thread possibly end up buying a Nintendo console. I didn't foresee this when starting the thread...
Look into a Switch Lite. They are comparable, they just don't attach to a Base for the TV and the Joycons are hard built into the thing. My Daughter has one for Animal Crossing and she LOVES it.

dude, do you really expect me to remember such minute details? Especially since that wasn't my PC. It's been decades ago but running the gauntlet, killing demons was quite memorable :)

Because of nostalgia ;)
The PS2 was my last console and i've been a PC gamer only since 2005. I thought that i would be a PC gamer only forever, but something new into the market has changed my mind. I will buy a PS4 sometime in 2021 for one reason only and thats for the Playstation Now service. On Black Friday, you could buy a year subscription for $42. It used to only be a streaming service, but Sony has made all PS4 games downloadable which is why im interested. All Sony first party will be permanent additions eventually and they add a few AAA third party every month. Around 500 PS3 titles are streaming only which is a nice bonus. If you only play one AAA title every month, it will more than pay for itself. In a few years, i will buy a PS5 when they start adding PS5 titles to the service.
I did not like nintendo back in 1985 i still hate consoles today

the fuck can you play a game on something so stupid like a controller without direct control over the camera?.

o yea those free games epic keeps giving is also very good got like 30 titles this year alone free.
almost zero reason to buy a videogame at this moment
