pmcollectorboy: They kill themselves because of intolerance of the religious sort and other sundry kinds of hardline morality policing that make them feel like abominations instead of different ways of being a person. Even now, scientists are still struggling to figure out what is causing the rise in autism, but we have keyboard warriors acting like they've already figured it out and toss around the term as an epithet like yesteryear's use of the word "virgin".
Speaking of autism, there are many people (and even organizations, Autism Speaks being the chief offender here) that treat autism as a purely negative thing that should be cured. Actual autistic people disagree with this viewpoint and say that Autism Speaks doesn't speak for them.

Do not donate to Autism Speaks. If you want to help autistic people (notice my use of identity first, not person first, language here), find another organization, like the Autism Self Advocacy Network, to donate to.

Also, never use "autistic" (and similar words) as an insult.

dtgreene: Transgender children are not pushed to have surgery; in fact, there is a lot of gatekeeping one has to get through in order to be approved for surgery. In fact, getting a child approved for gender reassignment surgery is not going to happen unless the child is near adulthood and has been on hormones for a while, and hormones aren't given before the age of puberty anyway.
And there have been numerous pushes to lift these 'hurdles'.

tinyE: As for GreasyDogMeat, after today he's probably due for a warning at the very least.
Which I'll promptly ignore as the only potential justified warning I'll get is for language.

Point out my 'hate speech' twit. I dare you.

Indeed. Calling you autistic is an insult to those with it.

louitrilobite: The daily mail is considered particularly right wing and reactionary and in search of controversy to sell papers and return to the good old day sometime in the 50s, don't take what they say on face value. : )
Actually, it's even worse than that. The daily mail can be said to be responsible for the death of at least one person, transgender teacher Lucy Meadows.

Really, the daily mail is that bad.

Change my mind about WHAT specifically? You have NO idea what my stance is and you continue to prove it.

louitrilobite: No Stress : )

But thank you.

If I can just make one person begin to understand or just begin to think then everything id good, if not then I have lost nothing : )
I hope I didn't sound condescending, I'm sure you've dealt with much more of this in real life than I have from behind a computer screen.

I understand how tempting it can be to jump in and correct misinformation, I'm tempted too. Also, how often these types of conversations are more of a performance, not to budge someone from their positions, but so a third-party seeing it won't just come across unchallenged misinformation and take it for the truth.

It's just that it's easy to get caught up on it, and I know that I sometimes benefit from someone tapping me on the shoulder and telling me I can let go, that someone else will do it for me.

If you're doing it from a healthy frame of mind and not letting it upset you though, I can only say go for it. :-)

I respect louitrilobite for her personal input and politeness. You, on the other hand, haven't offered ANYTHING.

DaCostaBR: Look, you're arguing with people who argue scientific consensus is pseudo-science because they can't fathom that science may have progressed since they were children decades ago, and left their simplistic worldview behind, and hold on to their preconceptions instead of seeking the easily available information. People who readily believe, and hold onto, every horror story they hear about trans people because it aligns with their pre-existing beliefs, even if they are easily disproven.

You said you're used to it, and I bet you are, but I just wanted to say that you probably won't change their minds, and in the end, they can all walk away from this and forget everything you tried to teach them; but given that to you it's a personal matter, it might be better to save yourself the unneeded stress.
How many relationships with transgender persons did you have, If I may ask?

I don't scream when either of those get near.

I do scream when idiots get near though.

In all seriousness, I hope everything works out well for you and your child no matter what happens. I'm not in any way against people being taught tolerance. That isn't my issue. It is how it has become political and how certain ideologies are being pushed.

My... 'pricklyness' is aimed at the people unwilling to talk about the issue, hurling labels and lies everywhere. A very polite individual was driven away with downvotes by slimy lurkers that wont engage. So... I don't bother with politeness unless the other person is as well.
