Now i`m black, yep, brown of skin. As a kid I always worried about racism and took racism from some white kids, even some Indian kids. Although it really wasn`t that bad.

However, many of my greatest friends were white. Grew up with them, played games with them. I listened to martin Luther King and understood that racism is racism no matter what colour you are.

After playing battletech for a while now, I call battletech racist to WHITE people. Your mercenary team are all brown, black asian or a woman. No white man. the only way to get a white man is if you employ him as a Merc or make yourself white in the game.

Racism is racism. As a man of justice and fairness who has known racism this racism to whites sickens me and while Battletech as a tactical and strategy game is really good, the racism is really putting a bad taste in my mouth.

Devs, fix this you are being what you think you`re not- Racist. White men are Human too.

I had to write this; i`m sure it`ll be banned or deleted.

Oh, so white people being represented by women is racist?

Sorry. But that's misogynist.

I've been one for 42 years.

I respectfully disagree. :P

A white man or a human? If the latter, what were you before you were human?

Just to totally kill the conversation, I'm going to say "a fetus".

Ah, but now the real question is: what were you before that?

i am black and honestly, as someone who keeps his distance from most news/media/etc the race stuff barely registers as a blip on my day-to-day radar. don't really care too much about the general public's opinions, thoughts, hopes, or dreams. ultimately i take care of myself and my family and i have no complaints.

however, it does seem these days that many devs to have a socio-political bent of some sort. again, their opinions on matters of sociological upheavals and economic downturns are by and large meaningless to me, however when i notice it in-game it takes me out of the experience and i usually turn the game off for good. i have not tried battletech yet but i really really enjoyed shadowrun dragonfall and hong kong, and i do not recall them leaning in a specific racial direction.

Oh crikey, not another thread on which came first, the fetus or the tinyE!

And yes, threads like this generally end up with premature ejaculation or something similar.

My guess is tinyE. He's been around forever, so I'm sure he remembers the formation of the first fetus! :-)
Not having a race choice is creative decision, so they have full right to do it. Maybe the game could have a story reason for such lack of choice (eg employment of white males is frowned upon in the universe) . Unfortunately, some creative decisions are perceived as ''racist'' while others aren't. Case in point this game vs Witcher 3; while this lack of choice / representation won't be spoken about by the games media, Witcher 3 lacking black people was.

Alternatively, you could say this isn't racist, but its not allowing a male option. But that excuse won't even hold up story wise because obviously you can be male as other races. Either way, it looks like a deliberate choice.
But I agree in one point with the OP. Racism and sexism stays the same, no matter who the target is. Yes, racism against white people is racism and sexism against men is sexism.

That said, however, there are so many games where you can only play white men, that a game where you can not play anything but white men is only a small counterbalance. So I don't see it as offensive. It just shows that the devs overdid their 'let's be different' shtick.

Dragonfall and Hong Kong are incredibly racist. The only way to play as an elf was to create one. What's with all the hate for the pointy eared dandelion eaters?

Which is in no perceivable way different from developers (and storytellers in general) yesterday. It's just that yesterday's devs were sustaining the status quo, the perceived norm, particularly in racial issues. Today's don't, and having grown up with media created with the perceived norm in mind, you start thinking that those didn't have a "socio-political bent" back then, but of course they did: They normalized whiteness and (best case scenario) exotified POC. That's literally communicating conservative values, if you wish. Today's devs go another route. Tough beans for some.

I'm probably going to greatly regret joining this conversation at all but here goes:

I don't believe that simply not having some group (any combination of skin color/gender/sexual orientation) represented is discrimination. Thinking like that only leads to ridiculous tokenism. As long as the game/book/movie whatever is good I honestly don't care if there's not a single white guy there, or if all the characters are white guys.
