Today let's take look at the renowned turn-based strategy title developed by Harebrained Schemes and published by Paradox Interactive! BATTLETECH is a turn-based tactical game where you take command of a mercenary outfit of 'Mechs and the MechWarriors that pilot them, struggling to stay afloat as you find yourself drawn into a brutal interstellar civil war.

Did you know?

• BATTLETECH is based on the military science fiction franchise created by Jordan Weisman and L. Ross Babcock III in 1984. Weisman is also one of the founding fathers of Harebrained Schemes, a studio that was responsible for the game’s development.

• After the success of their previous games from the Shadowrun franchise, members of Harebrained Schemes have decided to change the setting of their next title. The BATTLETECH Kickstarter campaign they launched in September 2015 received its funding goal of 250,000 USD... within an hour!

• During the battles against enemy mechs you have to watch out not only for enemy missiles and lasers. Just like in the BATTLETECH board games, overheating can successfully impede your mech’s actions or even lead to its demise.

THE SOUNDTRACK
The space opera vibe of BATTLETECH is strongly reinforced by the epic music composed by Jon Everist. For his outstanding work, Everist received an American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers “Composer’s Choice Award” nomination for “Best Video Game Score of 2018”.

Get the original OST to the game by buying its Digital Deluxe Edition or Mercenary Collection!
I still have this installed and enjoy playing it every now and again. It's a good game.

At the same time, the fact that Harebrained barely fulfilled what it promised (or, in some cases, didn't fulfill it at all); and used the successful funding of the game to sell out to Paradox pretty much guaranteed that I will never buy a title from either company again.

Meh.
Of all the Battletech/Mechwarrior/Mechcommander games over the years, this one makes the most serious attempt to reflect tabletop mechanics. Quite solid as these things go, though if you're not at least somewhat into the lore it's likely to come off as an Xcom clone with obtuse rules.

Is there any info or assumptions what Harebrained is doing next? Battletech is not really my cup of tea but I enjoyed Shadowrun trilogy a lot.
they folded mate... Paradox owns the name and that is all that remains
BattleTech is the best game I've played in years. I've got over 300 hours on it and I might even play it again.
Next to MechCommander it is my favourite Mech game.

Is there a link to a news article about this? I don't know much about the company itself.
And I usually like Paradox games, but I don't want them to turn into an EA.

The two big questions with Paradox are:

1. What happens when the first-generation founders go away? After all, Hawkins-era EA was the good guys.
2. Can they survive the curse of the vampire? Many have tried, many have failed.
This was a fantastic game. I hope they make a sequel of sorts. It was a very memorable experience to be sure.
I love this game, though I guess getting the complete edition years after release, with the bugs mostly ironed out and without the bickering and drama surrounding the kickstarter helps.

About the sound track, we also have this GDC presentation by composer Jon Everist about the recording techniques and locations they used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swVNN8OJWR8

Roguetech makes this game truly amazing, but it can be a pain to install. The truly sad amount of mechs made me done after the campaign, that with the heavier class mechs making lighter classes useless. So in end game you really only have around 8 useful mechs, all of which you have by the end of the campaign. Roguetech fixes all of this, makes it as close to the TT as possible, and with all the different mechs, variants, and gear you can play it forever. I highly recommend the mod, but it does take some getting used to if you dont play the TT and are coming from the vanilla game

Can I still get the same campaign story with this mod installed? I like higher tactical difficulties without grinding.

not really because you don't get any of the best mech until the story campaign is finished... after that you have to do the flash point stories to unlock them and many of those flashpoints are for 50 T mech or less with the one on one dual being the hardest fight in the [unmodded] game

I like the mod for what it is but its not needed to balance the game... you can of course just ignore the story missions but that makes for a very boring experience imo

The timing was very, uh, fortuitous. When the game was getting backed, the sky was the limit,
far as what was being promised: the campaign will be coop, there will be a string of full-fledged
DLCs, and if you fund us to THIS level, you'll even get to meet famous characters from TT.

Game dropped April 2018, good writing, aesthetics and game-play, but an un-optimized, buggy
mess. Then, before the release of the first "full-fledged DLC" the company sold in June 2018.
After that, the lofty promises were pretty much weaseled out of with minimum effort (what coop?
you get two mechs and some missions; and Natasha Kerensky says a line of text; now shaddup).
And Harebrained's been quiet since.

I still like the original game and the flashpoint mechanic was a nice touch, but everything else
felt like a lawyerly interpretation of "bare minimum".

And if I sound bitter about it, it's because I am.

Grr.

I gave Roguetech a go at one point. I liked certain aspects of it (certainly the stupid
amount of new 'mechs and tech), but not the added instability and extra crashes
(that's something the original game didn't need any help with :)

I guess I'm just tired of regular people with day jobs having to do extra work to realize the
vision of a studio that had already been paid. I know it's probably just some form of vestigial
idealism, but I keep seeing people like jordan Weisman -- who should be the most passionate
about doing a project justice -- back out of it as soon as they're in the black and it irks me a little...

...or, y'know, a LOT.

Still, at least with mods, you have the option to change things to your liking after the devs take a hike.
Options are a good thing.

No, no -- the crazy rabbit yet lives. The studio in Kirkland is still around, just under new
management. But from what I remember Weisman is still CEO.

They just haven't announced any new projects since Battletech, is all.

I beleive with the latest version you can play the campaign with it, but I havent tried to personally. I, like most, just use the career mode and start my merc company from the start.

The launcher is the easiest way to install if your internet is good. The precached version can be tricky, but its not that bad to figure out.

Theres over 2600 mechs in this mod along with a persistent online component where people try to take planets for their faction and the map changes. I havent tried the online component, but the latest version allows for territories to change and planets to be taken and lost in single player as well. You also have the clans and their mechs and tech along with the full IS map with the clan territories. You can ally with and do missions for the different clans as well, which is one of the most attractive points for me initially.

I know its not for everyone, but if you found the base game lacking in content and/or challenge I highly recommend giving it a shot. If youre really in to Battletech it really gives you a lot of BT goodness.
