Has anyone played this? Its a free open source fantasy based strategy game thats been around for a while it seems. What would other strategy games would you compare this to? (assuming you played it)

Thanks.
When I first played it, I compared it most to Age of Wonders (1). Basically you buy units on your cities hex fields and move them turnbased to victory.

I did enjoy Battle for Wesnoth. We even played it together. Besides the campaign that already comes with the base isntallement, you can find a lot of campaigns ready for download, or you can make your own.

There are also tons of new units or races to add, or sprite-customizations if you want to style it up. Being free I absolutely say it's worth a shot.

...

And if you like Worms, have a look at Hedgewars. ;)
Oh my goodness, it does look exactly like the first Age of Wonders. Thanks for the "recommendation"
If you ever played Fire Emblem on Nintendo colsole, Battle for Wesnoth is pretty much fire Emblem but with hex grid instead of square grid
Thanks everyone!
A good 2D fantasy turn-based strategy game. There are several campaigns with varying length / difficulty, tons of mods (new factions / units, campaigns, game modes, etc.). Units evolve (most of them) so there is a slight RPG side to the game. A multiplayer mode is also present to play against players from all over the world.
Played v. 1.10 in 2012, got through the novice campaigns and I think one intermediate one? Finished 5 campaigns, so if 4 were novice then yeah, if 5 were novice then no intermediate one completed. Either way, in the Dead Water campaign, I think the next to last scenario now that I check, I just found no way to do it, was getting thoroughly trashed, couldn't even reach the unit I had to fight (and that's not even the final fight), if I tried to push forward I was wiped, if I tried to survive I ran out of time without moving forward.

Overall, competent effort, and a lot of work obviously put into it, but the RNG is awfully powerful and turn limits are drastic, you'll always be desperate for time. And difficulty quickly goes to insane...
Why would you need to ask? It’s free, install it and try it out?
Loads of additional campaigns and you can even get a portable version (portable apps version as well), so no need to even install it.

Time is finite. If someone knows the answer, why spend hours/days/weeks looking for it?

In the wise words of Zathras, time is infinite, you are finite :)

Kelefane: Battle for Wesnoth any good?
Yes. Better than many games here on GOG IMO. Doesnt mean you will like it though...

Yes.

Fantasy General, Fantasy Wars and similar games. There are also a lot of mods. Some change the gameplay fundamentally and (for example) turn it into something more resembling an RPG than a strategy game.
Based on the little bit I have played 'Fantasy Wars' and the lot I have played Wesnoth I like Wesnoth better.
Not sure about Fantasy General vs Wesnoth - it has been too long.

Well, if your sure that someone else's opinion exactly matches yours and you don’t have 5mins to install and try it?

5 min is rarely enough to find out that a game isn't very good, especially if it's a somewhat complex game. I (regretfully) spent an entire saturday on STALKER thinking I'd like it before I had to give up and call it a game that's not for me.

Unfortunately that kind of thing is a common experience.

5 min? What sort of game can you get a fair opinion of in 5 min? If it's anything decent, more like hours... And if somebody points out something that for you is a dealbreaker you know not to go through the trouble of installing and then uninstalling (and maybe cleaning up traces, security software rules, whatever, if you like your system tidy) in the first place.
