I first thought of this back when the issue came up

If I ran a forum I think the only words I'd ban would be slurs against demographics. Generic four letter words would be fine.

I wouldn't ban anything. Case by case basis moderation only if something absolutely warrants it, like doxxing, specific calls or threats of violence/harm, malware, that sort of stuff. Probably also clearly false information presented as fact and not opinion, if it may have sufficient impact and the user won't retract it themselves if presented with proof.

You aren't expecting the (mostly missing) blues to do that "little" extra work, are you?

I'm of the view that the purpose, the "benefit", of free speech is for people to share and discuss ideas, ESPECIALLY unpopular or even hated ones, as that's the kind of speech that needs protecting. Disagreeing with others is fine and normal. Getting heated and emotional at times is also to be expected. Occasional insults should be frowned on but ultimately tolerated, so long as they're not too extreme. I feel demo slurs go beyond "disagreement" and are intended only to anger/ offend/ repress minorities... a way of reminding them to "stay in their place". They have no benefit to the sharing of ideas and open discussion, are in fact a detriment, and can even lead to harm.

One caveat to this is how forums let members themselves handle issues. Does the forum allow you to mute another? To block their PMs? Are posts rated and neg repped posts are hidden? What features does the forum have that affects who sees, or has to see, what. For example, a forum might provide two separate discussion sections. A is a polite discussion forum. Swearing is banned, discussions are moderated, and civility is enforced. B would be the free for all forum, anything goes (not illegal) and no moderation occurs. Users could then decide for themselves which discussion section they want to spend time in.

I don't know if I'd get into aspects of mis- and dis- information. Maybe if it was a news, politics or education forum, one where accuracy and truth is imperative. If it was a casual forum, like a gaming forum, I probably wouldn't care.

Not at all, was just saying the maximum extent of what I'd ban, not that it must be banned.
You started well, but then rather contradicted yourself. Free speech is free speech. As long as it's just speech, that's the end of it. Things to be frowned upon is one thing, but banning words is going way too far.
