jonridan: To be fair BG3 lost me years ago, even before it was announced and the entire genre started focusing so much on NPCs relations, fortress/bases (starting with BG2) and lost the focus on the adventuring. We need more games like Icewind Dale... Nothing wrong with story based RPGs like Planescape Torment, by far the best story I've ever seen on a videogame and even read the fan made novel (which is amazing by the way), but what I like the most on an RPG is the dungeon crawling and fighting (I even enjoyed the NWN main campaign more than the expansions...).

StingingVelvet: This is always a strange take for me (no offense) because we've had many CRPGs that have both an excellent story and reactive world along with good combat. I don't feel like you have to pick one or the other, and games should aspire to be good at both. Maybe when you're a small indie and can only invest so much effort (Solasta for example) I understand it, but for something on BG3's scale it should absolutely be good at both.
I'm not saying they can try to be both at both things, and even excel at both things... But I just don't care for the "reactive world" and such on RPGs. I want to create a party, and go out and fight "the evil in the world". I also don't like huge open worlds which is like "the main focus" on a lot of action/adventure/rpg games (not all, of course)... smallish open worlds are ok (but if I can't travel 100% of the map from one end to the other in under 5 minutes, I'm just wasting time with empty space or a lot of stuff I don't care about like crafting, mundane side quests, etc...). I like the idea of an "icewind dale roguelite", but then they lack the "atmosphere" of IWD, the ambience, the sound design... It's usually just music in roguelite (and roguelikes). At least I haven't found any game like that. Maybe I should make it myself... if I ever learn to program haha

jonridan: Slightly out of topic: if anyone has a recommendation about games like Icewind Dale (focus on battling/adventuring and not dialogue and NPCs relations) please let me know.

AWG43: Alaloth might be the game that you seek. It's still in Early Access, but I have completed it two times already. The gameplay is combat focused with a top to down isometric third-person perspective and pretty heavy lore. The dialogues and story are there, but the majority of time you will spend fighting the monsters and managing the items you find or receive as rewards. Keyboard and mouse controls are present, but I think they haven't implemented very well yet. So I played Alaloth using a controller.
Alaloth interests me but it just keeps getting delayed over and over... I actually plan to give it a try once it releases on console.

Breja: It's a very differnt style of gameplay (first person dungeon crawler with turn based fights), but I've been having a whale of a time with Bard's Tale 4. It's basically nothing but combat and puzzles connected by a little exploration. The companion interactions are limited to small, quite funny short dialogues that trigger on their own from time to time, and are just enough to give the cast some character and make them likeable, without any soap opera bullshit. The combat is really great, and the puzzles... where, there's a shitload of them and I love some and hate others, but in the Director's Cut you have a magic song you can use any time to just skip most puzzles, so you can have all the fun of the ones you like and none of the tediousness. Also, the music in the game is just phenomenal. Possibly the best game soundtrack ever. I can't praise it enough.
Unfortunately I don't like first person dungeon crawlers. I like seeing my characters travelling like a "board game".

Ah I gotcha, you meant more your taste rather than developer limits. Well we disagree very much, I think story is very important, but I respect where you're coming from. I know a lot of people play games like this and Pathfinder just to make cool builds and see the combat strategies play out. I knew a guy on another forum who had thousands of hours in Pathfinder Kingmaker and had never even finished the story, he only cared about builds and combat.

I do kind of agree on open worlds though, I much prefer the original BG1 style with zones. Dragon Age Inquisition was a great example of that format brought into modern design. Wish it was more common.

Time4Tea: I'm quite liberal-leaning and I've been following D&D/Forgotten Realms for about 30 years. It's supposed be a medieval fantasy setting, not about a bunch of sexually-insecure teenagers pretending they're in a fantasy setting. Cyberpunk yes: focusing on sexuality makes total sense. Forgotten Realms, no. Please have some respect for a very well-established 40-year-old fictional setting.
1) Forgotten Realms is not medieval setting in either technology or culture. 2) We are obviously not following the same Forgotten Realms, because the one I followed has pretty high amount of sexual content. Just read Ed Greenwood's Elminster novels. It's not explicit stuff, but it's still there.
avatar
Wirvington: Why can't a story about sex also be a "big story"? And shouldn't we judge the depth and dimension of a story once we've experienced it? Doing so beforehand and just on the basis of one of its possible themes doesn't strike me as very reasonable.

I get that when there're new additions or changes to a known and beloved franchise some people are going to disagree with and resist to them, but the premise of this thread seems to veer dangerously close to those "keep politics out of my games" statements and the point that every game engages in sexuality is ridiculous. Moreover, in a medium where sex is often portrayed poorly, it'd be great to see more studios raising the bar in how sexuality and sexual relationship themes are tackled.
Story about sex could be "big story" and Baldur's Gate might indeed be the game that raises the bar in how sexual themes are tackled in videogames, but it probably won't be the case. Larian isn't known for the strength of its writing so I'll wager this one won't be the one which will change that. In any case, I'll be following reviews about its writing since I'll pass this one despite my love for Original Sin and Baldur's Gate 2, for reasons which don't have anything to do with sexual content.

Sabin_Stargem: Sexuality is an important aspect of being human, one of the things that makes life worth living. To remove sex from a person, isn't much different from being barred from reading Lord of the Rings, or Super Mario World being banned. It would be unfair, cruel, and stupid.

It is important for people to defend sexual liberty. In my eyes, puritans are evil at heart, because they corrode humanity's ability to enjoy life to the fullest for no real reason.
What makes life worth living is completely subjective, but as Lawful Neutral person, I agree with you about puritans being evil.

anzial: russian bots are everywhere, starting shit like this thread.
So you think a depiction of bestiality/zoophilia is perfectly fine and normal? Something that, thankfully, is illegal in most countries and comes with a prison stint?
What's next? Depictions of pedophilia in game, as long as "it's a wizard who just changed his form"?

People are so degenerated these days....

Also BG2 had a nauseating amount of romance dialog and characters like Jaheira coming on to you immediately.

Don't worry friend, I don't believe anybody here has any interest in sex with racoons, you are safe lol.

On more serious note, I believe wizard/intelligent cat/whatever he was shapeshifter from Divinity series which acts like Casanova for female cats was kinda a running gag in those games, so nothing new here.

Ah yes, older widow hitting on her ward, nothing controversial about that!

Dude it's just a dumb joke, very Larian style, nothing more, nothing explicit is shown. Thankfully it's still perfectly legal in most countries.

Pretty sure murder is illegal (and arguably worse thing to do) in much more countries than bestiality, yet I don't see people raging about it's depiction in 90% of games.

GHOSTMD: Yes you are right, even i do celebrate all the options given, except for the language change.
It is quite small (unless there is more IN the game itself) so ignorable for most that don t care and just
wanna play. But as i said the reprocussions of pandering to the madness crowd with such language changes
come later, once Larian starts to say NO, once Streamers are attacked for streaming games.
Thats why i am so against it. It only brings trouble, the last few years have clearly show that.
Sooner or later the rage mobs get "activated" and it was always awful, mudthrowing and namecalling.
Just dive into what happend to Hogwarts Legacy Streamers, just because JKR started to say *NO* to the
social media weirdos that PUSH that exact language for internet points.

We as players should start to care about our language, just as we should start caring about OWNING
our games... but we re to lazy and too "weak" to do so, because "screw it i wanna play" it is all over the
place and thats why you re right with that point here. Yet the resentiment is growing, intolerance is growing
because of those exact tenencies destroying good stuff we all had / have.
avatar
StingingVelvet: What is this point about language you're making? I honestly only remember this thread being about bear sex.
Check the Character Creator, they patched in Social Media Speak, with an Identity option.
That is where i draw the line, i don t mind the freeness of all the other stuff.
For the very same reason i didn t bought Solasta (yet) an i was really interested in that game as well.
LOL.
