The Kohan series of games, developed and published by TimeGate Studios early this century, is a VASTLY underrated fantasy RTS series.

Kohan:Immortal Sovereigns and Kohan: Ahriman's Gift (a standalone expansion) introduced the characteristic innovative RTS gameplay, and were followed by a sequel, Kohan II: Kings of War, which made a very smooth transition from 2D to 3D graphics, without messing things up though some game mechanics were changed.

I have very fond memories of all three games and regard them among the best RTS games I have ever played. Call me blasphemous, but if I had to pick between erasing one game series from human history and had to choose between the Kohan series and the Warcraft series, I'd probably pick the Warcraft series (no offense to WarChief Thrall).

Here are some gameplay videos:
Kohan:Immortal Sovereigns
Kohan II: Kings of War

Since TimeGate Studios filed for Chapter 7 Bankruptcy in 2013, I don't think we'll see any of these games here any time soon (though they still are available on Steam for some reason)... unless GoG decides to buy them in order to expand their RTS catalog! *wink*wink*

Of course, all the games have a disastrously low number of votes in the community wishlist. Please contribute with your own:

The Kohan will return to their glory!

i don't know if that's the voice of the youtuber or the actual voice you hear in the game. either it's text to speech or someone's schizophrenic. you try to contaminate us perhaps?
already voted for these a while ago. love the kohan games.

Been forever since I played but I seem to remember the games had an interesting unit mechanic, where you would group a main unit (combat type, normally) with a secondary unit that could be something like engineers or another combat unit.

Never finished Kohan since I was having a lot of crashes - likely due to barely meeting the hardware reqs at the time. The bit I played was fun, though.

The series has introduced a lot of interesting mechanics I've never quite seen in any other RTSes, at least not as the Kohan games are using them, like supply zones for regenerating/resupplying companies, guard zones to control combat events, and, though perhaps not unique, formation and terrain modifiers which can drastically affect the outcome of a battle.

And you are correct, you can assign a front line of four units of the same type in a company + 2 support units which can be engineers, spell-casters etc. or regular troops (same as the ones in the front line).

It can be a bit disorienting for newcomers I think, but it all fits in nicely once you get a few games down.

why you don't talk to me nerf? :'( you still mad nerf? is it because your mother is riding my "joystick" nerf?
Kohan 2 is a long time favourite of mine. I was gutted when I discovered that upon upgrading to windows 8, there was no way to get it working.

This is unfortunately why it is not on GOG. If anyone here's aware of a way to get it working on win8.1, please do let me know.

Hmm, they look like pretty interesting RTS games, I'll probably get them when I become significantly less broke.
They look interesting I must say. I took peak at the Steam forums and sadly they are never on sale, even more unlikely when the current owners are bankrupt, they are likely in some kind of limbo even still being sold.
Let's hope they will show up on GOG one day, last time they were on sale on Steam was 2 years ago.
These games are so relaxing and so satisfying to watch. The art is just beautiful.

Make it happen, GOG.

Sadly, I don't think it's likely we'll see them here anytime soon... I've started looking for alternatives already.
