Question: are you going to moderate the entire forum by yourself? I mean I don't see a lot of blues around yet. Will you recruit people for moderating the forums?

We'll see. There's been talks about recruiting moderators and there's also been some suggestions, but I don't think we'll be doing it any time soon. All GOG staff have the same moderating capabilities, so more than likely I'll ask a few of my colleagues to use them, if it seems necessary as per the forum rules.

I'm personally fairly satisfied with the new rules - now we just need to see whether there's the will to enforce them.
I do have a few questions that I'll post publicly here for everyone's benefit (my apologies if this violates the "public criticism of mods" provision, although I sure that's more related to individual controversial cases as opposed to general enforcement in order to prevent protracted arguments about whether a closure was warranted or not):
* Following on from WBGhiro's post - how will abuse of the rep system be monitored and punished? Will it be based on more longstanding abuse or isolated incidents? WBGhiro is being rather facetious but the point is a valid one - what happens if someone accidentally clicks on the "report as spam" button? I know it's happened to me at least once. Do the mods have access to a user's down/upvoting history?
* "Posting something that is knowingly false." I'd trust the mods to enforce this rule appropriately but it is rather general. Someone may post something that is "knowingly false" as a joke and the falsehood may be apparent from the context or absurdity. Think "The Onion" or "The Postillion". Wouldn't it be appropriate to add that knowingly false claims should not be posted in bad faith or out of malice?
* Can I still say "fuck", as long as I'm not telling anyone maliciously to "fuck off"?

In case it's not until after the weekend before there's a reply, perhaps this page in the support section would give a hint. In particular: GOG.com employees […] volunteer their time to assist you, so you should keep in mind that they are usually posting outside of their everyday responsibilities, and therefore may not always be available.
So it seems likely to me whoever helps (if anyone else at all) will be doing so in their spare time, which sounds like either after leaving work or before starting work, assuming there is any time to spare.Post edited March 10, 2017 by thomq

As someone who has past experience in running and moderating a forum, I can only advise against recruiting moderators from the general community, no matter how trustworthy they may seem. One of my first jobs in the gaming industry was as a Community Manager and I can assure that whoever you pick as a "lay mod", they will almost always have an agenda or bias in terms of what they let slide, remove or ban. Keep your mods in the office. For my part, I won't be doing it ever again.

JunglePredator: Don't get me wrong; I do believe it's possible for some language to offend individuals of a group even if it's not aimed at them. However I don't believe anyone can be offended on behalf of someone else is all. <snip> JunglePredator

I wonder if this is starting to be off topic.

I think we're fine. However, if we decided to discuss your Furby collection and how much you wanted Furbacca. Well then ;-p

I was attempting to show that the rules can be interpreted & that one should proceed on the basis of the most common language.
And since that's English I'd say use UK standards.
"Appropriate" takes on the meaning of what the majority thinks is correct.
Includes little swearing, avoid slang since it's not universal & try to be as clear as possible.
(IE talk to each person like you're talking to your manager at work, not to your pal at the pub or a person on the subway.)

So then no posting while drunk and no sign language? Sounds reasonably easy…And since that's English I'd say use UK standards.

Hi, my name is Mateusz, do I get banned for a week? ;) This part of the rule is a little bit silly to be honest, it should be up to me if I want to tell everybody here and on the entire internet my name or email.
It looked like up until now nobody at GOG was able to track and eradicate downrepping/reporting as spam problems and you suddenly intend to enforce the rule forbidding it? I'm sorry but what exactly changed?
I have some reservations regarding rules about cheats and hacks, posting knowingly false things, bumping and off-topic, and also spoilers. But it shouldn't be a problem unless moderation from now on is going to the other extreme end of the spectrum. (It isn't, right?)

I made this question in the previous thread and it went completely ignored: how will you deal with the alt-account problems?
Will new accounts lack certain privileges (like downvoting) until some criteria are met? Are bans either IP-based or have something else about them to prevent the person from posting?
Because as it is, this rule
The same goes for all the other rules, in fact, if your only form of moderation is bans that can be circumvented with an alt-account that takes less than a minute to create.

is very cute, but it's completely meaningless if you can't enforce it. The same goes for all the other rules, in fact, if your only form of moderation is bans that can be circumvented with an alt-account that takes less than a minute to create.
