I happened upon this article. Apparently, Apple doesn't consider one's library and their store front two separate items. Once it is removed from the store it is taken from your available purchased content (library).

"I see that you are unable to locate some of your purchased movies. After reviewing this case, I have noticed that the content provider has removed these movies from the Canadian Store. Hence, these movies are not available in the Canadian iTunes Store at this time. However, Apple is constantly working with content providers to expand the iTunes Store catalog and to make more items available in more countries."
Sounds awfully familiar with what happened on GOG when extra content or "goodies" were removed from customer accounts. I'm pleased that has since been corrected.

While digital goods are convenient, it cannot always be trusted to be made available. Hearing this stuff really saddens me since physical goods are quickly becoming a thing of the past. In the end, what will you be left with?

Holes in your bank account.

Another article laid this out a bit differently. Basically mentioning that whether it's "rent" or "buy", in cases like these it's "rent" just with an open-ended return date set by the place of purchase when license to distribute gets revoked.

You don't win with any option anymore, really. Physical media decays, anything stored digitally could be wiped out across multiple fronts, whether by divine act or company motivated moves. Treasure your copies of Hot to Trot while you can.

I agree. Apple is so proprietary, closed, monitored and restrictive ecosystem that I'm glad I bailed when I did. And the prices they ask for are absolutely ludicrous but they do it anyway because they know the Apple fanatics will buy everything they throw at them on day 1, no matter the cost.

This should be illegal.
Already purchased items should stay in people's accounts even if the copyright owners change their minds afterwards.
This is one of the main reasons as why I stopped buying a lot of media.
Luckly Gog understood that such behaviour is unacceptable.

Doubtful. I'm sure there's a clause in the iTunes TOS that says, "This is a mere licence, screw you."

This is hilarious. I love this.

The was the same thing with some novels on kindle, if I remember well. Orwell's 1984 was suddenly removed for copyright reasons.

Always makes me laugh.

European courts have stated a lot of times that TOS is not an enforceable contract. You paid for a product which you can't access anymore without any fault on your side. You should at least be able to get a refund.
