babark: Considering it requires the original game to play, and will be completely free otherwise, I see no reason why this should be shut down.

And honestly, every (mechanically or narratively) good 3D game from the mid-2000s or before should get a graphical overhaul at least. The 3D back then was atrocious, and definitely didn't age well.
Makes no difference if it needs the original or not. I'll be very suprised if its not shut down or just abandoned.

I disagree some games where bad sure, but not all of them. This was not one that was bad looking.

Sure it does. I don't know about being abandoned, but what reason would anyone have to shut it down? It doesn't eat into any sales, in fact, it would probably renew interest and add sales for the game. And considering that mods have existed for KotOR for years (and modify story, gameplay, graphics, sound, etc) without being shut down, and this is essentially a glorified mod- again, I see no reason it would be shut down.

I basically see it like a parallel to what OpenMW (except the open part, of course) is to Morrowind- a complete reworking of the engine, that uses the same original game data files.

As for the graphics...did you see the picture of Bastila PoppyAppletree posted? :P

Mods arn't really comparable to a remake of a whole game.

But even so it depends on the owner, and Disney are very protective of their IPs you just have to look at the numerous fan projects that have been shut down by them.

It doesn't matter if you see it as a mod or not, what matters is how Disney see it.

Yes I did, it looks alot better than the new model they have of her tbh.

Why not? There are many mods that are remakes of entire games. That's why I used OpenMW as an example.

Fan projects infringe on copyright and IP. This doesn't.

OpenMW isn't a remake. As it keeps the game how it is just ups the graphics. By your logic we should be calling the up coming Resident Evil 2 re-release just a mod.

It does as its an unlicensed use of Star Wars. If they just did as OpenMW did then it wouldnt be, as they did not change the game. But they are and it is.

You could say that this is a new game as they have changed just as much as Capcom have for Resident Evil 2.

OpenMW changes graphics, gameplay, removes bugs, adds new features and new areas.

What Apeiron says itself about what it is on its own site: "Apeiron is a full-conversion mod of the Knights of the old Republic that was released in 2003. Apeiron is a overhaul and restructure of the original game with added content, new worlds, missions, HUD, inventory, items, and customization"

KotOR already has a very in-depth modding scene. Without the mods, you wouldn't have all the locked content, additions to the storylines that were left incomplete, graphical/audio/gameplay. Disney has not said anything to anyone yet.

The core gameplay in OpemMW is kept the same though.

Yeah so its just as i said previously a new game, but to save their asses they are saying you need original files.

I'm done replying now. We will see what happens to it.

It is a complete remake of the engine. It's using original game art though. For code, full rewrite is not considered a derivative work.

In this KoTOR case, they don't use original game art, they remake it. For art, it is a derivative work if I understand correctly. That's why copyright owners can shut it down if they'll feel like it.

Thats the point I was trying to make thank you.
As long as it requires the original game, I don't think they will be sending it a cease and desist. Then again, you never know with EA...

But KoTOR has freely available mods over a decade old that include new character models, retextures of old models and redone environments (not to mention audio, music, gameplay and story). Disney has never made any complaints.

Apeiron's remake, doesn't go outside the scope of any of these things, nor would I say it is the most high-profile of these changes to the game, which is why I find it odd people think that Disney would shut them down.

Sure. All I said is that they could cause trouble if they wanted to. You never know with legacy publishers.
If only someone would do the same for Star Wars : Episode 1 Racer. Now that would be incredible, and easier too I'd imagine. Jedi Outcast with its yet to be equaled, let alone surpassed, light saber combat could do with a facelift as well.
Looks ambitious; like something that will be released around the same time as Star Trek: Excalibur :P
I am not excited about this at all.
What I've seen so far of the levels doesn't feel or look like the original game much. Bastilla is fine I guess...

Not that it matters, this will never be finished.
