bad_fur_day1: This whole thing is starting to smell like "I'm a scammer but I did everything right, even did all that hard work alt rating myself up, and I still didn't get free games!"
Bingo! only two threads appear on forum search (both giveaways) and nothing shows up via Google or any other search engine, yet the OP's rep has magically increased by 40 points since he was last picked on for having low rep by Apehater.

http://www.gog.com/forum/general/dying_light_giveaway/post71

Trying to place the blame on Apehater when its actually the alt factory where doronnorod (among many others) materialized from that is responsible for xckx being fed up on "Open this Thread." In other words the real message in the OP is "please stop making it harder for alts to grab multiple free games, ok apehater".

I am really surprised that so many posters here totally forgot the point of this thread.

If you have no proof then don't accuse innocent people of being scammer.

It is idiotic to go on a witch hunt against people with low reps.

Last I checked, a lot of giveaways here have no rules/conditions and are free for all. So a lot of people enter.

Anything wrong with that ?

As opposed to going on a witch hunt against people who monitor the scammers? That's okay? XD

It's a glass house you're living in, so I highly recommend you stop throwing those stones. :P

Of course I won't mention the irony of turning yourself into a forum cop in order to trash someone for being a forum cop.

Maybe if you would have gotten your facts correct, it might have more impact.
The "Open This Thread" closed down due to scammers and alts, not because of Apehater.

And I, among others, are curious how you gathered 40 rep (even with downvotes) since August while only posting twice to which people have replied and both of them were free gifts.

As long as you only enter with one account, nothing is wrong. If you create an army of alt accounts to increase your chances of winning things get unfair for the people who are honest (and also for the people who host giveaways).

Btw, care to explain how you got a rep of 40 without any visible forum activity?

Sexual favors? That's how I got to 900.

How can you two be so sure? The OP registered on August, so depending on the exact registration date, he/she has had enough time to reach a 40-something rep. And unless this forum gets a proper search tool, you cannot be sure about anybody's forum participation. I've got a (legitimate) 67 rep and still you can only find 12 posts of mine on Google.

Fairfox: I don't see the problem; people are giving games away, FREE (capscapscaps), from the goodness of their heart(s). A number of newly-joined users are scammers. Are all of them? No, but if you're giving a game away the best way to ensure it's not to a selfish scammer is to discriminate against all newbies. Is that fair? No? Blame it on the rotten few ruining it for everybody else. People don't have to give games away, and the disgruntlement might be understandable if just kept to yourselves, but actively complaining on the forums that it's not "fair" holds no water for me, at any rate. Suck it up. Use the forums. Make friends. Gain trust. Enter giveaways.

I haven't done any giveaways for a long time but if I did I would absolutely bar new people too, with a heavy heart (but not heavy enough to make it a free-for-all). I think tone is very important; when making giveaways I notice many people are stating their 'rules' in a mature and, y'know, disappointed way, not pointing fingers and typing 'SCUUUUUUM!' to all and sundry. If a new person to the community can't handle that, and can't relate or empathise that sometimes you have to watch yourself, I don't know what to say.

Of course, in the end the few scammers who have made new accounts in the double figures (and you know who I mean) will have a bunch they've 'preserved' and will no longer look new, and then new actions will have to be taken, I suspect.

Anyhooz, That's as serious as I get, because now I'm going to bed to dream about rainbow sheep.
The three reasons why the community has gone down the crapper are in no particular order, giveaways, sales and just general growth. A lot of the "scammer" problem isn't a scamming problem, it's paranoia. There's no way to know if an account is the only one that a person has and there's no way of knowing if a person has complied with the rules.

People have argued with that, but anybody who suggests otherwise is either a smurf or delusional.

Early on there wasn't the problem of begging and scamming contests. I'm sure it did happen, but the public awareness of it didn't come until much later.

People are free to do as they wish, but the scamming problem comes down to ungenerous gifting and trading with people that you don't know. People who opt to put strings on their gifts with no method of verification or enforcement are going to get burned. And people who are trading gifts with people they don't know are running a risk as well.

I've never bothered to do formal giveaways and I've never really been burned on it. The last code I dropped the newb couldn't be bothered to say thank you, but realistically, I just don't do code drops any more. I didn't expect anything out of it.

I don't think you can call it a witch hunt. The people looking for scammers are not the sort of people I would have around here if I had a choice. They're a significant part of the problem.

As I've already stated, why would anybody bother to stay here when newbs are treated with so much hostility and paranoia? I doubt very much I'd have continued posting after the first few days if things had been this bad when I joined.

Even now, I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to want to be here.
