MightyPinecone: My guess is so that people wont take the Humble Bundle version for themselves and sell or give away the Steam key.
But the weird thing is that this doesn't stop them doing that... Once you've got it on your Humble account I don't see much stopping you copying any pasting the key. Anyway, the key is time limited so people can sit on them and sell them later when the game isn't free - I would think that would be sufficient.

SirPrimalform: Yeah, good thing that no one was saying anything like that then!
You really don't get it do you, and completely ignored my other helpful information, as evidenced by calling me a dick.

What is so bad about linking Humble to Steam?
Plenty of stuff on Humble requires that. It makes me wonder why you would even have an account with Humble. Not to mention an account with Steam.

Guess what, when you created those accounts, you linked them to your email address ... the shock, the horror.

What age are we living in?

But never mind, it is perfectly ok and normal to complain about getting free stuff ... many do.

Whatever you do, don't sign up with the Enix store, as they pass your email on and you get spam nearly every day because of it. Great models and such to check out.

Ok, if the key Steam key still can be used on whichever account, then I'm at a loss. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't think you get it. The point is it's fairly ridiculous to make someone link a Steam account when all they're after is the DRM-free version. It's not about "oh noes, if I make a steam account then Gaben will eat my soul!!1", it's just a bit ridiculous to be required to have an account on a different store.

What useful information?

Do you mean:
Because after clicking on the email online at Humble, I could scroll past the Steam Key section and grab both the game and Soundtrack via direct links.
Because I'm afraid it's bollocks. If you'd looked at the screenshot I posted you'd see it's not even possible to go through the checkout without linking a Steam account. You only got to the stage you did because presumably you have linked your Steam account in the past.

I have Humble account but I do not have Steam account as I do not use Steam at all.
I would like to get DRM-free version of Hacknet Deluxe from Humble as this version does not require Steam.

What do you not understand? :)
avatar
Lexor: What do you not understand? :)
Why you have a Humble account at all, as most of it is Steam related.
And why you are so surprised when a game, even a free one requires Steam.

Humble is not GOG.

Because the Humble Indie Bundles always include DRM-free versions and there are numerous DRM-free games on the Humble Store. Isn't that a good enough reason?
And the free game doesn't require Steam, how are you not understanding this?! It includes a DRM-free version, which is why it is so inane that they make you connect to a Steam account anyway.

Perhaps, but then perhaps you just don't understand how things work. My money is on the latter.

For starters, why would I look at your attachment. I don't know you from a bollocks of wood. ;)
For second I don't need to.

That said, you are just like many, who put words into the mouth of others.
What one doesn't say, is usually just as important as what someone did say. You should keep that in mind, before you jump to conclusions and insinuate things. Stick to the facts.

Perhaps if this place had emoji, you would not be so angered at me, for what was said more tongue-in-cheek than sarcasm. Though to be fair, there was some sarcasm too .... the endless silly complaints here do get to me sometimes.

Have a good day. :)

Like I said, you don't know the reasoning, and just jump to conclusions.

By the way, Steam provide their own DRM-Free games .... fancy that.

Perhaps they should provide them from another store, to ease your sensibilities. :P

Most? Maybe indeed yes. All? No.
I have a lot of DRM-free games on Humble and they are not require Steam account.

Because it was listed to have DRM-free version and DRM-free games I have from Humble Bundles do not require Steam.
So I also have Uplink but I've never gone much further than the tutorial. Hacknet seems a lot similar. Seems like the only difference is in the stories. Does anyone know if this is true? At any rate, I think I'm going to go back and play Uplink first.

I wonder if these are actually steam key giveaways on HB and it happens to have it on HB afterwards as a bonus...

Uplink :)

Ahh yes uplink. Based a bit on the movie Sneakers, which involved multiple site bounces while hacking to delay detection. It's not hard to get 50+ bounces using the NIS server to get lots of computers on the link, but making your initial jump and map that looks like squiggly lines everywhere slightly annoying. Regardless... Once the points are set up, you hack in, hack a password to get on, do the job, erase as much of your presence as you can and leave; Lastly go to one of your early jump points and erase your logs so even if they get to that it will be difficult.

When you nail stealing 3million, is when you feel like you actually did something :P Otherwise there aren't quite enough missions that are within your skill level to keep you busy. And other minor gripes like where you could make notes of accounts when you're working...

If that was true then it was kind of false advertising.

Was it? Free with condition of needing a steam or audio account, since it seems to be over i can't get a screenshot but it was listed in it. Not exactly false advertising.
The giveaway is over. If someone just missed it, I have a spare steam key I can give. Unfortunately, HB doesn't allow to gift codes for DRM-Free version, so that's all I can offer.

Previously, when I was getting any DRM-free game from Humble Bundle there was no key and the game was auto-added to library. The Hacknet page said: "For key redemption, a free Steam or Audio download account is required." and there was no other note that "it requires Steam" for every type of download.
