Playing it now!
I'd trade in a bit of immersion for some navigational aid...
(but that's me, I get lost easily in 1st person games)
I liked the game very much. Nice, tense atmosphere and a fascinating setting to explore and think about.

Actually I turned it into a Pen&Paper adventure for my role-playing group. :-)

That's why there are signs on the walls leading to most key areas, etc. ;)

jepsen1977: To be fair I had just played Doom 2016 right before playing Soma so.... yeah.
LOL I can imagine what that's like!

Doom 2016 ruined other FPS games for me. It was so much fun and so fast that everything else felt bland.

Then you get to SOMA, where you're meant to take everything slow and can't fight back... yeah, I see what went wrong :P
I was hyped for this when I saw it coming free on Epic. Then today I was looking through my GoG games and saw Soma there already. Pretty sure I didn't buy it...so was it free during some sale already? Anyway, I need to bump this up the play list, it looks good.
I really love the Penumbra games, especially Overture but I can't start loving SOMA game, it's not fun to play.

Yes, it was given here for free at some point.
I find this game almost perfect.
Yes the progression is very linear.
The graphics are not quite up to what is currently done, but the work on lights and ambience largely offsets.
Once started, it was difficult for me to stop. I loved the story.

Jep. We did. The players were suitably spooked. :-)

No wonder you always have some killer Mafia concepts - that RPG DM in you - if I ever move to Germany I want in on your group ;)

I wanted to play this one this Halloween (finally) but I ended up too sucked into another couple games to add a third. So no Halloween scare-fest this year I think.

"most"
"key areas"
I would've enjoyed exploring more if there was some kind of automap.

The pacing is excellent, the voice acting is professionally done. It's true he game is linear and narrative-driven, but at the same time it doesn't hand holding the player. You still have to move around and explore the area by your own quite a lot. The game also doesn't try to be too many things at the same time, that's what i appreciate about it. I cannot wait for Frictional Games next IP, if i'm not mistaken they haven't release anything for quite a while

If you turn on debug mode you can speed up your running and play with the graphics modes making it easier to see and move around.

It is quite decent if you want a nice atmosphere and not much(at the start) major action....to me it seems to be more about enjoying a setting/world(so far) than just action/etc, and I like it for some reason....but that's only natural as I love many of that company's games.

Just trying to be helpful/possibly turn someone back onto a game they might like given time, is all. :)

(Plus the game seems to be mostly linear/compact so far, which helps mitigate the problems you had somewhat, as most times one will eventually[after a few moments of going one way)/likely see a bunch of signs pointing out some game areas one needs to go to/should explore)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also not to nag on you, but on others in general: I dislike how dependent people have become on automaps/quest arrows/etc in general. Yes, they are helpful and even a must sometimes, but there were many games without them & people simply drew their own maps/made notes/used their own spatial awareness(and other brain functions) to keep track of areas. Many nowadays have ti too easy, I tells ya peoples. ;D
