I've looked at this game a few times, but held off because many complained that it needed features and polish. Well, seems developers have (possibly) moved on (based on Steam forums)...

... is the game worth the price?

Anyone have experience with it?
I remember playing ADOM when it was free. And i'm sure 95% of what i may have to say would apply to the paid version, except that they added a GUI and graphics vs ASCII output.

Beyond that, depends. ADOM and ToME are similar in a number of ways, though ADOM goes more perks to build the character plus usage, while ToME is more points invested into specific skills.

A big turnoff of Adom is the reliance on food. I remember buying as much food as possible to carry into a dungeon going from over-burdened, to before long running entirely out of food and starving to death. (Faster if you are a lizard character who spits acid) and many runs dying by starvation. ToME doesn't have this (thankfully)

I say go try the free version of ADOM and ToME. Then decide if you want to buy.

Isn't Ultimate Adom a different game/a sequel to Adom?

Yup.

"After over 25 years, here comes the official sequel to classic ADOM.
Experience the modern sequel of the traditional roguelike dungeon-crawling classic. Enjoy unlimited replayability through endless procedurally generated dungeons, countless monsters, grafting, crafting and a vast amount of skill trees.."

I keep reading that Ultimate Adom is unfinished. Is it missing too much to be fun?

It feels like someone made an experiment with no idea how to make things meet in the middle, and it discards the lore that ADOM had built which is a strange move for a game that's only four years older than I am to make.

It'd be akin to Super Mario Bros discarding Mario for Jyff.

In the many reviews I took in, Ultimate ADOM has the issue that it tries to meet two disparate elements (Hardcore Grognards and Casual Neophytes) and failed to satisfy either party. Now the website for Ultimate ADOM is so dead that it still has a pointer for Google+.

It also has the problem that Tales of Maj'Eyeal has where a lot of skills (which may be prerequisites to other skills) are completely worthless to have in your repertoire, but you must invest in these useless skills.

Oh, and unlike most other roguelikes, neither ADOM or UADOM are open source, so there's no fixing their mistakes to be done by the community.

Sachys: Yup.
Ahh, i figured it was just an expansion, not an entirely different game.

I really haven't looked at ADOM or it's related stuff.... since 2008? Back when i had a 800Mhz machine i was playing the original ASCII version on and was dirt poor.
