Continuing on from Pangaea666:
People have been using "literally" to figuratively mean "figuratively" for a long while now, so the latter has recently become an official meaning of the former, because it's used that way. I don't personally agree with this specific example, but it is one way in which language evolves.

They just use the word metaphorically. Just like when you say that "dictionaries finally gave up". (Dictionaries aren't sentient life forms)
