I noticed they had a weekend sale and decided to look up the classics.

Good ol' Connery, suave man of the times!

And the movie everyone knows:

Also warner bros before the 2nd millennium

Such nostalgia!

I'm confused. I'm gonna go eat some cereal so I don't get confused.
I'm a fan of good movies. I don't give a flying fuck what studio they're from...

The Avengers (not the Marvel one), by the way, is a godawful movie that should be purged from humanity's collective memory.

I love the original series much more, but the film was a cheesy bit of fun. I also like the first matrix(I feel the others were a tad confusing so I don't like them as much).

Agreed.
People lost their minds when Marvel hired a woman to compose for a superhero film when Captain Marvel was announced but they all seemed to take leave of their sanity in forgetting that the legendary Shirley Walker already did that for Warner Bros. and DC when this gem was gifted to the world.

To each their own. While not great, I rather enjoyed it. IMO much like Hudson Hawk, it's a movie that mainstream hated but has a definite cult following.

I realize you prefaced this with "IMO" but I have to question whether the film version of The Avengers has an actual cult following beyond the pseudo-ironic "Sean Connery in a bear suit!" styled "fans".

That movie isn't good, that's fine, but I think one of the reasons a number of people have such a distaste for it is due to how much of a disservice it does to the television series. It seems kind of strange now, given how many "let's make a film outta this show!" examples we have and how often they've deviated far away from either the entire point or just simply the tone of the material they're based off of and have seen bigger successes than The Avengers did.

As both a fan of the tv series and the film, I don't tend to agree.

You are certainly allowed to disagree that The Avengers is a "cult" movie, but I've spoken to more-and-more people who are now enjoying it... where at release no one claimed to like it at all and it was in fact "trendy" to attack it. Perfect movie? Absolutely not. Entertaining? Yes... if you can just sit back and enjoy it without the baggage.

As for purists...

It's a movie... and IMO didn't actively undermine the series. This wasn't like the AMC remake of The Prisoner.

This blog sums up my thoughts on the film almost exactly:

https://theruedmorgue.blogspot.com/2006/11/avenging-avengers.html

I think a reflexive cynicism has taken hold of many and they are quick on the attack anything lacking that same oppressive cynicism... or that flirts with childish fun. Hudson Hawk... The Phantom... The Avengers... all IMO have this childish fun... (again)... if you can just sit back and enjoy it without the baggage

But that's just my take

I like it for more than that, so there's one that likes it for more than bear suits at least.

Also yes, the film was over the top and silly/had weird elements, but then the tv show had some as well in several episodes(maneater of surrey green, the weather control one they had on the show itself, etc).

Or more simply put, some cannot turn their brains off and just enjoy a film in some cases.....especially if it's using an IP they really like or are into.

Perfectly fine, though you seem to have taken that as me saying it's impossible for anyone to like it at all and that's not what I was aiming for.

You also make my initial point in regard to it bombing based around how much it differed against the television series - if it had been released within the last decade or so then I believe it would've had a slightly different reception than it got back in the late 90s. It still would've never avoided being compared against the show but that's just the reality for films of its kind.

What if such were released long after the current generation has passed on or at least become too old to care and it were given to a new generation who didn't see the originals? Then it'd likely be able to go without such comparisons for the most part I would think.

Do you want to believe a reality would exist where a remake of a film you love suddenly becomes "the original"?

"I love that Back to the Future film - Justin Bieber was so awesome as Marty McFly! I really beliebed he could travel through time!"

I mean, it could happen (the reality, not Bieber in a Back to the Future remake... well, hopefully) but the implications of "being too old to care" or "dead, so who would be left to care" are a different discussion for a different thread altogether.

It actually has happened for some films iirc...like the very old original monster films.....many kids nowadays don't even know about the originals beyond mentions by older folk and nostalgia channels on YT/etc.

Some like even think the 1999 version of The Mummy(while ok) is the original. o.0

Also also omg...don't even SUGGEST bieber as Marty.....*shudders*

(As for being ontopic...well the thread is about films so it's sorta related...but yeah we'd best get back on track a bit)
