The reasons I bought a Wii U are these 3 games: Xenoblade Chronicles X, Bayonetta 2, and Super Smash Bros U.

This is because when I buy a console, I buy it to play the exclusive titles. For most multiplatform games I prefer them on PC. However, if DRM-free is not possible, I get the games on their respective consoles (that I own) that play them best.

I thought Nintendo are moving games to the PC too?

I know... If they had enough games I wanted on the Wii-U I would probably consider it... But there just isn't...

I refuse to get a game system until there's 5 must-have releases... or it's all on heavy discount. But with how all the companies are acting, that's doubtful...

Well, Bayonetta 2 comes with Bayonetta 1. There is also Hyrule Warriors, LEGO city Undercover, Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10, and Mario 3D World.

That brings it up to 10 great games.
Also if you want discounted games, there are always older Wii games. I found many on Amazon (and at thrift stores - if you're willing to dig) at reasonable prices. - I got Kirby's Epic Yarn new for $8

Just because a game is good doesn't mean it's going to make it a system seller for me.

By heavy discount I'm meaning the Wii-U is probably going out the door and I pick it up for $100 and games at $5 each.

As for Wii games... I wasn't impressed with with the Wii system much less it's games or gimmicks. There's one game I'd probably get that's a rhythmn game that only uses the A/B buttons, and Xenoblade Chronoicles (if I can get one for $20 or less, which I never will), sorry that's it. Wii, you disappoint. I have a few perfectly good Wii games though, which I can't play because of the crappy control scheme (Nun-chuck & wii-mote) which includes Okami and Geometry wars, and I can't play them.

Bayonetta 2 - Watched all the cutscenes/storyline footage, it didn't feel right. If you just enjoy spectacle fighter then fine it's a must have, but comparing vs the first game, all the jokes and adult situations and suggestive themes feel forced and unnatural (repeated scenes and lines only because they were in the first game), like they couldn't quite get back into character or they had to censor themselves to a degree because of Nintendo. It's enough to break my immersion interest in the game, as much as I loved the first game (and have it for 360) I won't probably get this.

First party games (Mario, Mario Kart, 3D world) are as in my opinion: Meh. I don't buy a Nintendo console to play Mario honestly; And as much as I enjoyed Zelda (Link to the past on SNES), that's the only Zelda game I've really enjoyed. (although wind-waker is a close second, assuming I wasn't wisked away to Korea to be in the military for 2 years).

Alright So games I'm considering: Bayonetta 1&2, Pikmen....

and that's just about it... Hero 101 and a couple other games may pique my interest but really they aren't must-have.

So far the only good Kirby game I've played is the original NES one, and epic yarn and how it's shown off looks... shoehorned with the Wii-U controller secondary display functionality. So it's not on my list of games I want.

Oh please. Nintendo are rarely Japan first when it comes to (major) releases they know will sell well overseas. Smash Brothers Wii U for example. US got it first. Codename S.T.E.A.M., US got it first (Japan won't see it until next month). Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, US got it first. See a pattern here? Sure, we got *some* of the lesser games first and those which NoA can't decide if they want to sell or not (Fatal Frame). But generally, if Nintendo of America know it will sell, they get to release it before Nintendo Japan or at the same time.

And then there's the hardware. Wii mini, 2DS, etc., not available in Japan at all. And don't even get me started on indie games. That's a whole, "Oh you're in Japan are you? Fuck off then." situation for both Japan based indie developers and customers.

The fact that we get Xenoblade Chronicles X first only indicates one thing: NoA doubt it'll sell well at all.

Interesting... I know I've seen a short commercial for Wonderful 101 and it looked interesting... not enough to buy though.

I've pretty much given up on consoles, so in order to buy one they have to really really impress me... and have at least 5 games that are must-have. Honestly 5 games isn't such a huge requirement, unless you're Nintendo and only release a game every 6 months and think they can manage their console with only first-party titles, and no third party support.

I agree with you. 5 titles on a personal must have list is very reasonable.

I'm a collector so if the game is good, has historic meaning, and/or is novel, then I am interested.

My sister on the other hand went and bought a PS4 and nothing but multiplatform games, most AAA, none of which I would call killer apps. The only game she is waiting for that comes close is Persona 5 but even that is not a PS4 exclusive.

:P What's funny perhaps, is i'm re-watching all the old Co-Optional podcasts (entering Oct of last year) and they go over and over again how their new consoles just sit in the corner and collect dust and there's no reason to even turn them on, and occasionally there's a game they want to play but beyond that it's like the most disappointing console generation they've ever seen... And although overall the Wii-U sees more playtime than the PS4 or XBone (for actual exclusives) the lineup is still weak.

But yes, 5 games is reasonable.

Reminds me... Back when i was in the military in korea (2005) i made a rule for myself, and i've followed that rule. It started off that i noticed i had two thousand dollars in my account, and most people once they notice they have money go out and spend it, and then i hear all these stories of soldiers going off base and coming back and having no idea where any of their paycheck went (and they could only eat and live in korea because food and rooms were provided by the military). So...

Rule #1: Don't buy anything unless there's an immediate need or use for it.
This prevents crap from just cluttering up my space and room that doesn't need to be there.

Rule #2: You can't get it if it doesn't provide some new functionality.
A good example is getting a new computer/monitor/TV/game system, if all your needs are being met replacing your 30 inch with a 40 inch monitor just isn't going to do anything for you, not really.

Rule #3: If you don't need it, don't get it.

Rule #4: If you can't resist the first 3 rules, set aside a small budget and don't break it.

Following these rules my account has not been anywhere near going empty. Yeah i'll bitch and moan about how i want something (a game or a new larger monitor) but in the end it's saved me money, time, and lots of problems.

While I'm interested in the game, I don't currently have a Wii U and I don't intend to get one until it has at least a few more games I'd like to play. I always tend to purchase gaming systems towards the end of their life cycle (when they're cheaper and have built up a decent library of games) anyway.

A lot of people misunderstood the point of that announcement (including the author of that article, apparently). This doesn't mean that Nintendo will be turning their major games into multi-platform releases. What it means is that Nintendo will be developing specially designed smartphone games as a means to promote their gaming hardware and its games. The whole reason why Nintendo even bothered to announce "NX" simultaneously with this announcement was to drive the point that their primary focus is still very much the development of their own hardware and exclusive games for it.

Needless to say, however, a lot of people still missed this and jumped on the "Nintendo is going mobile" bandwagon.

I like the rules you set up for yourself and I think they are very wise guidelines, but I think the first rule should have the addendum and unless the item in question is discounted.

As you pointed out, a lot of us have very short-term thinking when it comes to wanting to spend money, but that equally applies to when we want to save money. When we're in that mindset, we take the "only spend if absolutely necessary" mentality to the extreme and will do and rationalise anything to spend as little as possible right away. As a result, we often let opportunities go by where we could have saved money in the long run had we spent some when that opportunity occurred.

For example, my local supermarket recently had a "buy one, get one free" deal on shampoo and soap. Admittedly, I needed soap anyway, so taking that deal was a no-brainer. But even if I still had leftover soap, that still would have been a great deal to take, since it would mean that I would save some money in the long run. But that's not how a lot of people would view that deal. Instead, they would think to themselves "screw that noise, that's still a few bucks that I'll need by the end of this week; I'll just make sure I don't get my hands dirty as much". As a result, when the time came that they absolutely needed soap, they would be forced to buy it and at any price the store offered.

So while I absolutely agree that it's prudent to always consider whether you actually need to buy something, it's also worth keeping in mind that, sometimes, you have to spend money in order to save money.

Maybe. There will be deals later... But i made those rules before i considered things going on sale. It's a 'I see this item and i want it...' type of thing, and goes universally, be it for a car or a phone or a wallet, etc. Basic items aren't considered. Food you'll eat, toilet paper you'll use, clothes you'll wear, etc etc. But this is for beyond the basics.

Honestly i got spoiled on prices on base, they were about half of what you'd pay for off base, although that doesn't go for everything, it certainly does qualify for every day items and tools and stuff you'd need. And off base (over seas) a lot of stuff was cheap so price wasn't so much if it was on sale or not. Got an awesome robe, backpack and blanket i still have and love for about $20 each where here they would probably be $100 each... Still got a $500 suit i haven't worn yet (paid $200 for it) So...

It's really up to if anyone else decides to use my rules, for me they've worked fabulously.

Just how the heck did I miss this thread? Whatever.

I am most certainly going to buy this game, it's my most anticipated game for this year. The most recent direct was disappointing, only really because I pretty much knew all of the stuff in it. The most recent trailer, however, re-instilled some hope that was lost after some trailers looked a little too technically unimpressive and I have been very cautious about the character creation and how that would affect the story. The most recent trailer assured me of a grandiose, Xeno plot that I would most likely love. I had a fear that the main character would resemble the Arisen from Dragon's Dogma, and I still do, but at least every other character looks to be interesting.

One thing I actually loved about Xenoblade was that I played as a character who was well rounded and fully developed as opposed to the games I had been playing (I just got an Xbox, so I was playing some RPGs where I could customize my character. But, in Mass Effect, all I did was put the sliders to the right anyway and he failed to impress me as a character). Xenoblade is one of my favorite games of the last gen and it is largely due to the plot and the way it's told, but the gameplay and the way everything comes together also contributed to this. I am rather excited for this game.

Oh, and I have a Wii U, I love it, but I probably would not have gotten it without this game's announcement.
