A while ago I ripped my entire DVD collection to MP4 for playback on my PS3 using one of those "one click" ripping utilities. While the video files were completely watchable, I've never been very happy with the quality of the rips. The picture always seems a little fuzzy, which I understand may be an effect of using H.264 as the codec (something about the way the codec "blurs" in order to offset encoding artifacts). I decided to try using a more robust tool to re-do the rips and the most recommended seems to be Handbrake, however, I'm a little lost in the options. I can't seem to find a setting that produces anything close to the original DVD quality and keep ending up with files that either look exactly the same as my old rips or are incompatible with the PS3. Anybody got any decent advice on using Handbrake to accomplish DVD quality (not HD) rips that still work on a PS3?

I haven't used handbrake in a long time and I don't have a PS3 so I can't help you with that, but you can check this forum (videohelp) and I am sure you will find there all the help you need.

Edit#2:Apparently MP4 and MKV are containers and can be lossy as well as lossless.
MP4 is a lossy format, of course. I always use MKV which is lossless and can be played by almost anything. Since I haven't got a PS3 I can't tell you if it will work but for me using Handbrake to create MKV files always worked well.

Edit: it's called MKV, obviously. I must have confused it with MP4 so I wrote MK4... :P

the ps3 can only use mp4v and avi
it cant handle mkv ( i know i tried )

all my dvd and blu ray rips for the ps3 are avi or mp4

Did you by any chance know of MakeMKV? it's the BEST program to rip movies or episodes from DVD or blu ray to mkv format with original quality not touched when made. I know ps3 can do mkv so hit that up trust me you will like that program I been using it for YEARS to put anime on my ps3.

Edit shit ps3 cant play mkv anymore??? I have never had my ps3 updated in years so they might have removed that option ugh sorry but do check out that program for other needs I will try to post another for mp4 format for the ps3 and Dvix format

the ps3 is quite a capable media player
its just a bit limited in what video formats it can use

i usually rip in avi format anyway so its not much of an issue for me
i only rip in mkv or mp4 if its a blu ray or a movie with a commentary track

and i have to re encode the blu ray rips for the ps3 the ps3 can only read fat 32
and off course fat 32 has a 4 gig limit
not an issue for dvd's

bit of an issue for blu rays but handbrake is capable of converting a bd down from 22 gig to 900 mb without any visible loss *

its quite impressive in a sick black magic voodoo kind of way

( * said movie was a 1981 horror movie so it wasnt exactly high fidelity to begin with but i didnt notice much difference )

do you just throw the raw rips on your ps 3 ?

I used This ugly tutorial page and this short tutorial video to teach myself enough about Handbrake to get my DVD library converted. It was sufficient for me, but it's not truly comprehensive. Still, though it doesn't address the issue explicitly, the tutorial does show where you can specify compression ratio and file quality, which should be what you're interested in. Handbrake, MakeMKV, and DVDShrink should be all you need for DVD and Blu-Ray format-shifting.

Yeah I did right from the program but I just noticed that sony removed mkv from the list of formats for movies for some fucking reason... I have never updated my ps3 in YEARS like 4 I think, I still have the original ps3 from launch though so maybe the new ones have different codecs on it.

Why would he use MakeMKV over Handbrake? The only reason why I used MakeMKV for some time was to make MKV files from blu-ray disks. And if you want to do that legally you'll have to pay for MakeMKV.

yeah that would have done it
my ps3 is a slim from 2009 and wont touch mkv

i usually use makeMKV to rip the file and then use handbrake to convert it to either a smaller mkv or an mp4

makeMKV is free to use when in beta
all you need to do is update the beta key once in a while from the official form http://www.makemkv.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1053

bit of a hassle but if you only use makeMKV once in a while its no big deal

MKV is not specifically lossless, it's just a container format, like MP4. What you put in that container can be lossless or lossy, it just depends on the method used to encode it first. Since I use a DLNA media server to stream to my PS3 from a PC over LAN, I can technically play MKV files on the PS3, with a little transcoding on the host PC, but there is honestly no reason to when I can make virtually identical MP4 files that don't require transcoding and can be played on anything. The MP4 files end up being a little larger than a MKV would be, but storage is cheap.
