De4thstroke: What makes it more infuriating is that the person who wrote the false negative review was never a customer. Are there people who just leave false negative reviews of small businesses just to ruin people's lives for fun? WTF?
avatar
firstpastthepost: There probably are people who do that. And just think, if a person does that for fun, what do you think they would do if they found out that review had been removed? It'll just encourage them to screw with you further.

That's why the best thing is to respond, be polite and offer to help fix the problem they said happen. If they are unwilling to accept any mediating efforts from the business it shows everyone else the person is just being a dick.
True, best not to feed the troll.

Yes. Welcome to the internet. It is full of trolls who get a kick out of trying to make other people miserable.

swsoboleski89: tell her to run a better business? also who the hell even uses yelp? is it more popular in bigger cities?
The same people who use mapquest?

Did you forget the part with the review being false and the person never ever being a customer?

That's a whole new level of trolling though. There is trolling to make other people feel like shit. But trolling to ruin people's lives? Damn... That is some cold blooded shit, right there.

Yes, it is. But unfortunately there are plenty of people who are absolute assholes once the controlling factor of the surrounding society is taken away. The anonymity of the internet brings out the worst in many people. That's why hate groups flourish in the internet. That's how cybermobbing works (which can also destroy a person for a lifetime). That's why doxxing is a thing (which can be a threat to a person's life) and the destruction of livelihoods. All done by people who feel inferior and want to revel in the illusion of power that the internet gives them.

On the other hand: does anyone actually trust yelp? Isn't that the site that tried to blackmail businesses into buying their advertisement space? Isn't yelp also famous for having lots and lots of fake reviews, both by businesses themselves and by their competitors? Who would use a rating site with such a bad reputation?

You see, if your business isn't doing well, and you don't know why, it's really, really easy to blame the first thing you can shake a stick at, as with alot of things in life that someone doesn't like such as why you can't find a job, why the kids won't move out of the house, why you're poor, why you're lazy, why you're fat, why your child is gay (not to take a stance, as i have nothing against homosexuals, but this is a classic example, 'cause parents blame everything from the water, some uncle's genetics, barbies, etc), why you suck at video games, why your child is failing in school, why TV sucks, why the internet sucks, etc. Sometimes, the first thing is the real reason, but often times it's more complicated than that, which is why new games suck: they keep getting the wrong reasons why something is good or bad. Minecraft wasn't popular because it looked like shit, and neither was cave story 'cause it looked like shit, so let's get rid of these shit graphics gimmicks already, especially when they're hogging more cycles than good graphics.

The only people who take yelp seriously are the people who use yelp for extortion. So if yelp's actually keeping people away, it's doing you a favor.

EDIT:

I just searched yelp for two businesses that I know are absolutely horrible to their customers (both places i've worked at), and, no, not a single review for either of them. I can't imagine anyone really takes yelp seriously, other than businesses.

I've never used yelp, nor have I ever searched for something and found Yelp reviews specifically. I say this as a customer.

Very smart.

All of our YELP reviews are great.
Clearly screwed up people using that site. :D

Same here, usually.
