Metroid series?
Hmm what about Waking Mars?
Maybe not a 100% match, but it is about exploring an alien world and I enjoyed it.

I've heard some good things about Waking Mars so thank you yes, I might check that out someday. At the moment I'm a bit more in the mood for 1st/3d person / top-down perspectives for some reason. I guess perhaps because I burned myself out on Super Meatboy recently :P

And I'm a bit ashamed to admit that I've never really played any of the Metroid games :-\ Seems to be a big deal
While it might not be exactly what you're looking for and I haven't tried them myself, I've read great things about The Sea Will Claim Everything and its two freeware prequels.

And of course there's The Longest Journey, if you don't necessarily need "alien" to be literal.

May I also recommend Patchwork

The Longest Journey is excellent, and it certainly feels the part: not literally alien no, but at times it does feel like you are stuck in an 'alien' world.
I've already finished the game but it's good that you mentioned it. It reminds me that I have to continue with the sequel.

Matewis: As in games where you play as a person stuck in an alien world, and in which exploration and discovery of the alien world plays a big role.

Currently I'm playing Unreal again, and I'm amazed at how much I still enjoy its narrative which lays sprinkled about the game world in random books, fallen terrans' logs and computer stations. The nali themselves are also a treat, some not knowing who you are and cowering in fear, while others decide to trust you by leading you to a hidden cache of supplies.

On the downside, it also reminds me how much of a letdown Unreal 2 was :P
You should definitely try The Solus Project. It fits the requirements and also it's one of the very best games in recent years. The alien planet is beautifully crafted and the events of the game are pretty intense at times.

Thank you, that'll be one for when I have a gaming rig again :) It looks like just the thing I'm interested in
I'd like to add Omikron: The Nomad Soul.

edit:

And how could I forget Anachronox.

A million times this.

Also, Lost Planet (sort of) but in that you come for the gameplay, because the story is absolute "Crapcom".

Hehe get it?
Because it is CRAP.
And made by CAPCOM.

GET IT? HAHAHA

HAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHA
HAHA
HA
...

yeah.

Ah thank you yes, I think that it is high time I play those two games. They've been on my list since forever. Not sure which one to start with though. Perhaps Nomad Soul. I remember playing the demo years ago.
For me, a big part of The Dig's appeal was the feeling of exploring an alien planet.
Not the kind of alien world you requested, but I think Harvester sorta fit here.

Vangers - top-down racing where lots of alien-world exploration is required to figure out the game mechanics.

Also:
The Fall
The Solus Project
I second Waking Mars.

Not fitting the requirement of an outsider's perspective, but if you want alien worlds, try Oddworld (especially Stranger'S Wrath) and Zeno Clash.
