JesperU: I have a question. I weight in on about 70 kg and I'm quite short for my length due to birth defect in my spine.
So yeah, I'm overweight. Or rather obese.

Anyway, on to my question. I seem to have problems sleeping lying down. It appears that i can only sleep while sitting up, leaning against a wall. The problem with this is I get some serious pains in my neck, shoulders and upper back in the morning. Do this have something to do with my weight, that I can't sleep lying down?
Absolutely visit the doctor if you were born short due to spinal issues and are now possibly having problems sleeping because of it. That should have been the first thought on your mind.

Considering your length you're definitely at a point where you should lose some weight. Assuming you're able I'd get some light exercise daily (if your lifestyle is otherwise sedentary), but more importantly, eat less. Make sure you're eating less than your maintenance requires every day and you'll lose weight over time.

I've just worked myself back down from 115kg to 80kg in the last 2 years which is now a kg or 2 below my ideal weight but I'm still below average on muscle mass (had a few bad years before that where I gained a ton of weight).

The last 20kg was done solely by making sure I ate less than 1800kc a day (my maintenance was ~2200/2300). Add some multivitamins for what you'll lack on a daily basis, drink 2 liters of water/liquids a day. Throw in a day every now and then where you eat at maintenance level to both keep your sanity and to keep your body used to burning food. Initially I did some light cardio on my hometrainer 30-40 mins a day but nothing heavy. (these calculations are for a 1m83cm male, if you're female or shorter like you are your maintenance will be lower and so will your target)

Edit: Oops, had 4 liters of water there at first. Probably because I used to prepare 4 half a liter bottles in the morning so I knew how much I had left to go during the day :)

As soon as you click "Post my message", it's everybody's thread. Just sayin'

Anyway, I'll go along with the others - get some expert medical help. You said earlier that the doctors sort of gave up on your case, but now you can try a new doctor and see if new advances can help. Hopefully it's as simple as some chiropractic work and stretching exercises.

As someone who doesn't sleep well, I wish you luck.

You forgot to say "no homo". And I got a boner. I'm so confused.

To be fair, I think already you know everything you need to. It's probably not related to the obesity and you should visit a doctor ASAP.

True
Agreed that your sleeping problem definitely doesn't sound like a symptom of being overweight. Sounds more like an orthopaedic problem or maybe an internal issue, like a stomach ulcer or something, or even upper respiratory trouble. What exactly keeps you from sleeping while lying down? Any pain or discomfort, or do you simply not fall asleep?

Seeing a GP as soon as you can would be the best thing.

There's honestly not anything more to say about it than see your doctor. We can't really help you any further with it at all until you report back to us what you've heard.

He could be eliminating caffeine, which would include most black teas.

Doesn't all tea have caffeine? I mean, I know there are caffeine free teas, isn't that all done after harvest? Are there actually tea leaves that are grown without caffeine?

It all depends on the type of tea.
None are truly "caffeine-free", but most herbal and red teas have so little caffeine in them (<1 mg per serving) that you'd fall asleep from the calming effect of them before you drank enough to give you even the tiniest of jolts.

From my personal experience, I would get your spine checked up. I have three slipped discs, one is at my neck and another at just under my shoulder blade (third being lower back). When I sleep I wake up every morning with a sore chest/neck and with no feeling in my arms at all. Its a horrible feeling. I am also over weight thanks to this condition but its definitely not a factor in the pain.

As others have said, go see a doctor and take care of yourself in general. :)
Depends on your definition of tea. Only tea I ever drink are from herbs (yes I can see the jokes coming) I grow, like tulsi, nettles, turmeric, ginger, so they're caffeine free, although they can be somewhat diuretic. It's not everyone's cup of ...tea.
