Hi, and thanks to those who replied my last request. How about this one....

Since I got Win7, when I try and install some games (Age of Wonders 3 was one) near the end of the install I get a message asking me to disable the AV (Vipre), so a C++ library can be installed. This never happened on my old XP system. Maybe because I was only installing older / smaller games.

This has happened several times so now I just disable the AV when installing (not when downloading). That gives no message and no problem.

I am just curious as to why this happens and if it should be a concern.

Don't get me wrong, AVs suck, and AVs cause problems, but when a program asks you to disable the AV, you should question it. Maybe you should check with virus total.

If you want the AV with the lowest system impact, which still detects pretty much everything you throw at it, all while having very few false positives (mostly if you umm.... experiment with stuff) get BitDefender. It's really quite excellent.

As to your question specifically, certain installations, depending on what and where they install may trigger some of the less well-tweaked AVs. So don't worry, install your Age of Wonders without fear, those C++ libraries are necessary.

Really. Unless the av actually flags up a problem, which I would the investigate I would never deactivate Av, and years of using various av software not had this issue, now using avira and no problems. One thing you will notice when installing games, coming from XP to 7 is UAC. This is M$ of breaking anything that is installed inside its folders. Always install everything outside windows folders, e.g. C:/mygames to reduce these problems. And maybe pick up a better av package. Did you try proceeding with install without deactivating av?

This is normal.
If you don't pirate, don't use antiviruses other than Microsoft's built-in thing, it's the year 2018 ffs.

Corporate security experts know and write about both (because they have to watch for attacks and help users navigate bad communication). Home users crying about how Microsoft is part of a globalist plot to watch them pee are fucking insane.

TL;DR: MS hijacked a domain name provider to spy on certain traffic, via ex parte (meaning no-ip wasn't allowed to be there to defend itself), and the only reason we knew about it was because they failed at it so horribly.

Thanks for all your replies, I shall carry on as I am for now.

Regarding UAC, this is a new thing for me. At the moment I see it (probably incorrectly) as "being in charge of the system". No one else uses it, there is only one account (me) and I am the administrator. I do get the message "Do you want this program to changes to your computer" when installing games I just click yes (or ok, or whatever allows it).

So far the only games I've installed are all from here, so they go to the default GoG Games directory, which is outside of program files.

I do notice a blue and yellow shield on the launcher icon for some of my games, but not all. The games with the shield are Legend of Grimrock, FTL, and Avadon Black Fortress. those without the shield (UAC shield?) include Age of Wonders 3, Anno 1701, Fallout New Vegas and nine others. That makes me curious. Not a problem, just wonder why?

Install everything outside windows folders, even if you are admin on your machine. Its just easier that way, even though for some games you will still need to ok it.
