The DRM-Free Revolution Continues with Big Pre-Orders and Launch Day Releases!

Good news! GOG.com is going to bring you more fantastic launch day releases, preorders, and other exciting new content from some of our favorite developers. We've lined up 3 big titles that we will be bringing to GOG.com in the next couple of months for sale or preorder that we think will be hits with all of our gamers; and we have more equally exciting games coming up soon.

If you've been a member of the site for a long time, you may recall that when we launched sales of The Witcher 2 on GOG.com, we had to add in regional pricing. The game cost different amounts in in the US, the UK, the European Union, and Australia. We're doing something like that once again in order to bring you new titles from fantastic bigger studios. Since we don't accept currencies other than USD on GOG.com right now, we'll be charging the equivalent of the local price in USD for these titles. We wish that we could offer these games at flat prices everywhere in the world, but the decision on pricing is always in our partners' hands, and regional pricing is becoming the standard around the globe. We're doing this because we believe that there's no better way to accomplish our overall goals for DRM-Free gaming and GOG.com. We need more games, devs, and publishers on board to make DRM-Free gaming something that's standard for all of the gaming world!

That brings with it more good news, though! As mentioned, we have three games we're launching soon with regional pricing--two RPGs and a strategy game--and while we can't tell you what they are yet because breaking an NDA has more severe penalties than just getting a noogie, we're confident that you'll be as excited about these games as we are. For a limited time, we will be offering anyone who pre-orders or buys one of them a free game from a selection as a gift from GOG.com, just like we did for The Witcher 2.

If you have any questions, hit us up in the comments below and we'll be happy to answer (to the best of our ability).

EDIT: Since we've answered a lot of the common questions already here (and lest you think that we've ignored you), it may be handy for you to check out the forum thread about this and search for staff answers by clicking this link here. (hat tip to user Eli who reminded us that the feature even exists. :)

Miljac: Well what's done is done. I too am disappointed by this decision but I guess we can a.) still buy games here, or b.) buy them elsewhere.

The question that remains is, what will you do? Can you coexist on GOG with this decision?
c) Don't buy them. As GOG reps keep saying in interviews, legally purchasing games is a choice, you need to give people a reason to want to pay money for something they can obtain by other means as well, for free. GOG had values that they stood by, and that was the reason why I wanted to make purchases from here. Give up on one of the two such core values means I will no longer want to do so. Besides, everything's DRM-free if you use the... alternatives, thank you very much.

Oh, noticed a vote on the Escapist forums too. So we have 4.8% accepting this at the moment...

Sure, help yourself with one more copy. No regional pricing on this one!
(sorry :))

OldFatGuy: ...I'd bet a small amount of my money...
Regionally-adjusted?

Vainamoinen: Errr... bring 'em on then?? I mean, how many pages should this topic still generate?

silentbob1138: They are under NDA and can't legally announce the games.
It was a very stupid decision to announce regional pricing with some unknown games, though. If the games are truly so great that we won't dislike regional pricing (which I doubt), it would have been better to announce the policy change when the first game gets released.
I think this decision wouldn't have been better, actually... that's what most companies do, enforce the measures and only then tell the community about it. I think this announcement was misleading and poorly coated under a "good news" dressing, but at least they had the decency of letting the community know in advance about this change in policy. Plus, they're keeping this thread open and allowing discussion on the subject. That's a good thing, in my humble opinion.

No, because there would always be a mass of GOG users that would oppose it no matter what the games are (there're plenty of posts in this very thread supporting this); they then would have a similar discussion in the Release Thread - and that would have damaged day-1 sales far more.

Dropping the bomb this early and on a Friday evening was carefully planned.

Will Nothing come with regional pricing? Because that would be just awesome!

Cavalary: Oh, noticed a vote on the Escapist forums too. So we have 4.8% accepting this at the moment...
I'd bet I could guess which country most of those 4.8% come from without ever looking... unfortunately.

You are right, that is third option, which I did not mention, thanks

I am afraid of responding to this in any way as it may or may not be used against me in light of the current situation. Sorry Fesin.

That means I win, right?

Brazil and Russia? :)
Those are the only ones that can benefit from regional pricing (get lower prices).

Niggles: I have a question for you all.
how does Gog grow if they seemingly are hitting brick walls bringing in new AAA games without doing this?. even though I don't like what is happening, I still want the company to grow but how can it, if its harder to get classic games and rely on trawling through indie after indie? ( hell I'm kinda over the oversaturated indie market as it is). I like and want PC games. not emulations or mobile games ( in case any one suggests those as an option)...
avatar
Novotnus: BETHESDA!!!!
avatar
Niggles: one benefit if its Bethesda, Skyrim, morro wind, Dishonored :D
Or Di$ney: Lucasarts...
--------^No, that's not a typo here.
BTW, I own Morrowind (bought it during a freemarket day for €2,50 ), but I'll wait until openmw.org has been completed

I'm thinking they have a much better sense of empathy for their fellow gamers than those from the country I would still bet makes up more of the 4.8% than any other.
